I was making a VCD using Nero Start Smart: which has NeroVision Express 2 SE [v2.0.1.11] , Nero OEM [v6.0.0.20] and Nero ShowTime [v1.0.1.16] running on Windows 98

When Nero was encoding the video, which was about 688MB it was about 70% done when a child pulled the power cable of the computer. As Nero encodes files on the hard disk before writing them on CD, when I restarted, I found no new file on the hard disk but the space of about 400 MB missing.

Now as the temporary files were being created in the root of the hard disk, I cannot just delete the folder and as I cannot select the file there is nothing I can delete. I have made sure that all hidden files can be seen but still there is nothing. I have tried to find all files and folders, which were created recently using [Start] [Find] [Find files and folders...] but still nothing.

Please help me out as I have a small hard disk :upset:

Have you tried running scandisk to see if the file has been 'lost' and the drive needs to be repaired?

Here's a web page (http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/usingwindows/maintaining/tips/beginner/scandisk.asp) about running scandisk.

Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

I ran scandisk two times in standard and thorough mode after making sure that the advanced setting were.

I think you have got it  as I have two files on that drive named File0000.chk and File0001.chk in which File0001.chk is 420MB.
I know this is the missing file. Now I want to know if it is safe to delete these files or not?

Thanks for helping me out :)

Yes.

I believe there is a way to try to recover it, but I don't know the details. Unless you need to recover it, just go ahead and delete it.

Glad I could help.
