CD-ROM wont read

i just reloaded my system a couple of days ago, cause i had viruses and stuff, so i got a firewall and wiped the hard-drive....but thats not my problem. after i rebooted my system, everything was running smoothly, until i reloaded my sound card, and it asked me for my system disk to get some base5 file off it. the reason i'm including that is because since that install it hasnt been able to successfully read a cd. i tried reinstalling my old software, both from backup cds, and from original install cds, and neither works. i even tried putting in my system disk to see if maybe i could fix something with that, and that froze up too. any help someone could give me would be great. thanks.
