View Full Version : How do I completely remove Zone Alarm?

Hi. I started having serious problems when I upgraded Zone Alarm to the current version (51033000). Games crash and hang, my desktop freezes and the monitor flashes on and off and I've got funny green dots on everything. I wasn't sure it was Zone Alarm that was the problem because the problems still occur when I shut it down, then eventually uninstalled it. But I've read posts complaining of the same thing so I'm guessing it's the culprit.

My question is when I uninstall it why do the problems keep happening? Is that possible? If so, how do I completely remove it?

I have a little program called Autoruns to show me what loads at startup and there's nothing there. There's nothing on the Add/Remove Programs and I do a search for zone alarm and get nothing. I deleted the registry key in hkey local machine/software. Is there anything else that needs removing?

Thanks very much.

Win2000pro (service pack 4)

Edit: Here's my Hijackthis log, if that's any help. I'd also appreciate any suggestions on what to remove to give me better system performance for games. Any tips would be welcome.

Hi,

If you have uninstalled then it should be gone.

You could use a Registry Cleaner such as Ace Utilities to remove any other references to it.

When did your problems start?
Could you do a System Restore?

Hi, and thanks for your reply.

My problems started a couple of months ago when I upgraded to DirectX 9.0c, and also did a windows update including service pack 4. It was no big deal, I just started getting dots on the screen when I set my desktop to 16bit colour. It was ok in 32bith though.

But in the last couple of weeks (the three new programs I've installed in that time are Medieval Total War, MSN Messenger and Zone Alarm update) I've been having all this other trouble. Most notably the system locks up from time to time and the monitor flashes on and off. Sometimes it clears up, sometimes it goes really bad and the hard drive beeps and I have to reboot.

I've also got green dots on the desktop and in games. I removed Zone Alarm and it still did it (also Messenger), so I figured that couldn't be it so I reinstalled it. And that really was bad. The computer locked up on startup. I had to go into safe mode to uninstall it again. But I'm still getting the glitches.

I'll try that Ace Utilities, thanks. But I'm not knowlegeable enought to try a system restore.
