hi Dodge

how did you manage to get the pics in ".art" format ? don't think i've ever seen that before.
you're going to need software but i don't know of one that will recognize that format off hand. will let you know if i find anything.

I just right click the picture and choose save and it puts it in as Art. Very aggrevating to.

I save alot of pictures of Hot Rods and use as my Backgrounds. But I often just take a look at them. In win/XP I dont have to highlight the Jpegs to preview them. But with Art files, then only program that will open them is IE and it will only open 1 picture per page which is a Pain....

Thanks Mr1drful. I appreciate the help..

try something for me.

open one of the pics in IE
right click and select "save picture as"
see if there is a "save as type" box.

if there is , see if it gives you options to save as different types. mine gives me jpeg or bitmap.

It gives me the option of Art or bitmap....

Good Idea though, I never thought of trying that one....

I will give that a try in Win/98 afterwhile and post back with what it does.

I am on XP right now. But i have the same problem in 98. I'm using IE 6.0 that could be the difference.. Not really sure though..

try one of these Dodge

this one seems to be a little easier to use but
you'll have to convert to bmp first

IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/english.htm)

this one looks harder to use but it DOES
handle .art format

XnView (http://www.xnview.com/)

both are free and work with Win/XP

Thanks, I'll give those a try and I'll let you know how it turns out...

Also, I tried your suggestion above in Win/98 and had the same results as with XP. Must be something either in IE 6.0 or AOL... Not sure which...

Dodge,

ART is a proprietary AOL image format. Most image viewers won't read it let alone convert it. IE can open them because it is equipped with a plug-in provided by either Microsoft or AOL. Whenever you surf using AOL, usually the only choices you get to save images is ART and BMP. This is a classic case of AOL wanting to be their own internet. I suggest you save images as BMP and then convert to JPEG with Irfanview.

As for the rest of the world....people using other ISPs...we usually get the choice of JPG, GIF, or BMP when saving an image. ;)

It has been awhile, but when I had AOL, there was a setting somewhere in it's software that disabled the ART format and displayed images in their original format. Don't know where the setting was or if it still exists. The easiest way is the BMP to JPG conversion after you save.

I just downloaded both of those programs. I haven't installed them yet. I have another problem though. I just saved some pictures from World of Wheels 2.. It says they are Art format (This is in IE) and I went ahead and saved them. I went into My Documents and it says they are Jpeg's.... I cant even view the things...

Something is going on here and I cant figure out what.... Save as one type and Windows is saving it as another.....

Found the Problem. Max, You gave me a clue as to what happened.

I had never had this problem before, it started about a week or so ago. I had Reinstalled IE 6.0. I clicked one of the choices that I shouldn't have. I reran setup to see what all I had installed and I had installed AOL Format.... That is what had screwed it up.

After trying to Save those pictures again, I noticed that the pictures were supposed to be Jpeg's, but IE and AOL were trying to save them as BMP or Art... Screwing the pictures up and I couldn't view most of them..

So I uninstalled 6.0 and now everything works great.... I now have the option of bmp or jpeg....

Mr1drful and Max, thank you two for your help. I really appreciate it.... Just wish I had thought about the Install of 6.0 messing with it... I know now to be more careful when installing 6.0....

Wish I'd seen this thread earlier

In AOL, go to keyword: Preferences, then to the WWW section of that and turn off the compressed graphics option and you get the original jpegs rather than .art files :)

Thanks Steven. I'm going to do that now. I looked at that last night and was wondering if Turning off the compressed graphics is what I needed.... That should finish things off then...
