Hi,

I want to ask if there is a way to defend me from the hackers/intruders at my pc. I currently use black ice defender, avg antivirus, spybot and adaware. Got some questions about this :

1. I wanna know if this is enough to block those hackers or has those programs any effect to block those intruders?
2. And is there another software to block those hackers/intruders?
3. Is there a possibility to change my ip at every startup at my comp? and is this a good idea? or is it better to keep the same ip and get some good software to block those nerds who wants to hack?

Cause i heard some wild stories of my friends, he told me he get hacked and his comp was totally taken over by another guy/hacker  . So i dont want this and really want to protect me against those hackers.

Give me some advices plz about the software what i need to download for protecting my self from the hackers/itnruders. Ty a lot.

I've never used Black Ice since there are highly rated free firewalls available but as I understand it, Black Ice works like all the others. It blocks intrusion attempts and can be set up to notify you when it blocks them.

If you've been online for more than, say, 6 months and haven't had your computer compromised, then it's safe to say that Black Ice is keeping your computer secure.

You also need to be keeping Windows updated. Microsoft generally gets out a patch to fix vulnerabilities in Windows as they are discovered (Internet Explorer>Tools>Windows Update). For example, there is a vulnerability which allows a virus to be excuted by merely opening an email message in Outlook Express. That was patched a couple of years ago but those who don't check the Windows update site regularly are still getting infected through that method. (I advise getting all in the Critical Update category and any you want in the Optional Updates category. Get driver updates only if you need them and then only from the component's manufacturer's site)

If you're wanting even more internet security, use a router. It is an effective hardware firewall. In the two years I've been using a router with a full-time DSL connection, I haven't had an intrusion attempt get past the router to the software firewall (I use Sygate's free one).

Did you friend tell you how his computer was compromised? Did he accept a file from somebody he was chatting with? Did he get online without a firewall, which is an open invitation to anybody with a port sniffer? Generally, if you keep Windows updated, always have a firewall running when online and never, even open a file from the outside world (floppies, CDs, email attachments and file transfers) without manually scanning them with an up-to-date antivirus program, if you use Internet Explorer, make sure "Install on demand" is unchecked in Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab and are careful about what websites you visit and what you allow any website to install on your computer, you'll keep your computer secure.

If you are using the proper firewall software, antivirus, and scans. If you are careful about where you visit, what you download, etc... Then you are pretty safe. To see how safe/secure your system is, go to pcflank and run their security tests.
