View Full Version : Weird Word Thing

I just got a new Dell and it came with Windows XP and Office for Small Businesses. I spent two hours on the phone with Dell today (they help wiht software issues for 30 days). They tried hard, but they couldn't figure it out. But I'll bet y'all can

If I have a document open and don't make any changes, but go "save as" under file (in preperation to save it elsewhere, or as a diff. file type for example)the thing starts blinking and freezes

At first, it seemed as though it was because I was trying to save converted Mac files, but it does it even with new documents. It doesn't do it if I make a change or two in the file, or if I just hit straight save.

I did a "Word" reinstall, guided by the nice man at Dell, and it didn't fix the trouble. Has anyone else had this problem? Thoughts? Ideas?

Hi Jean.

I have no idea really but lets try a couple of easy things first before we get drastic.

Step 1
Find the file named "normal.dot" and rename it to "normal.old"

(Let me know if you need help doing this).
Reboot the PC.
Try again.

Still no luck?

The next step is based on Word 2000 so I'm hoping it's similar for WordXP.
I want you to change the default file location in Word. To do so, open Word.
Go Tools>Options>File Locations
Highlight Documents and click Modify.
Change it to C:\
(Should be C:\My Documents at the moment).
Reboot and try again.

Let me know how you get on.

If you have the CD, just try the Install/Repair of Word.

This can sometimes solve problems.
