View Full Version : MS Outlook--File attachment default

I'm running Windows NT on a company LAN. Is there a way to establish a default for attaching documents to e-mails? As it stands now, I have to wade through about 4 stages of the site map to reach my own files. Since virtually all of the files I would wish to attach are located among my own files, I'd like to set a default which would take me directly there when I select the paper clip (attach files). My IS guys don't have an answer for me. Can anyone help?
Thanks
Smokey

Smokey I have hunted high and low and drawn a blank here.
On my work PC (W2k Pro/Outlook2000) the attach file dialogue opens at the last place I opened.
My W98 PC always opens up "My Documents" Folder.
I am yet to find how to configure this :(

hi Smokey
maybe i'm missing something here but ..
instead of opening the mail program first , can't you just highlight the file/files you want to send , right click , and send to mail recipient ?
that should automatically open and attach them to a new email.
i know it sounds backwards but it works for me. (i've always been backwards)

Smurfy & Mr1drful
Thanks to both for your replies. Mr1drful, the right click technique works great if you already have the file within reach. I'm talking about a situation where I'm banging out an e-mail, suddenly want to attach a file and then have to go slogging through (in my case)H:/Risk assessment/function shared/operational audit/auditors to get to SL, where my most-used files are located. I'm trying to find a way to default directly to SL when I click on the paper clip. Like Smurfy, I'm reaching the conclusion that Bill Gates doesn't want me to do it, so I probably won't be able to. rolleyes: Thanks for trying, though--maybe someone else out there has the answer!!

the only other way i know of that might help is to put a shortcut to that folder in whichever folder outlook usually opens by default (usually "my docs"). then it would only take you 2 clicks to get to the files.

Save yourself a lot of trouble with moving the location of your MY Documents folder....
Instead put a shortcut in your MY Documents Folder and call it A and then it will be waiting for you at the top of your MY Documents (that is if you sort by name and not by type) If you sort by Type then I would suggest giving the shortcut a REAL name and then it will be easy to find...
Hope this helps....

Try this...
Outlook menu...
View
select
Outlook Bar
you have three buttons. Outlook Shortcuts, My Shortcuts, Other Shortcuts.
Lets click on Outlook Shortcuts (or make sure it's showing open).
right-mouse button in any of the darker gray area
select
Outlook Bar Shortcut...
In that popup is
Look in:
select
File System
chase down your H:/Risk assessment/function shared/operational audit/auditors
folder(directory) and you have a new link in Outlook Shortcuts.
Click once on auditors in Outlook Shortcuts and you'll see your files.
While writing and email just drag n' drop any file into the email. It will automatically
attach it.
If your looking to get back to the Outlook list...

There are many options to add these new options to an already open
toolbar in Outlook. Play around with it.
I just couldn't live without Outlook 2000 ;)

OK, well all the above suggestions are usable workarounds but none achieve the desired result.
The one solution I have found (while specifically for Windows 2000 it worked OK on my Win98 machine) here:
OL2000: How to Set the Default Attachment Folder (Q252732) (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2fsearch%2fviewDoc.aspx%3fdocID %3dKC.Q252732%26dialogID%3d4092203%26iterationID%3 d1%26sessionID%3danonymous%7c3638281) may be difficult to achieve on an NT workstation as you will be unlikely to have administrator privelidges to be able to edit the registry to change your default documents folder.
Possibly if you bribe your sysadmin/IT staff with enough Pizza and Coke they may be willing to do it for you.

Thanks--your solution is a bit fiddly (when I click the file on outlook shortcuts, my e-mail disappears--I can then drag the file down to the task bar and ultimately it ends up on the e-mail after the e-mail window re-opens and I drag it back up. Am I doing something wrong here?) Certainly the best solution so far (without bribing the IT guys).
Thanks
