Our ISP made some server changes and we had to upgrade from Outlook Express 4.5 to 5.0.6 But I can’t get 5.0.6 to set up properly to use it.

In the Internet Setup Assistant I’m asked for the e-mail address, which I input. Then it asks for the e-mail password. Input that. Then it asks for the e-mail account. Here’s where I get into trouble. If I put in the e-mail address again, then I get the e-mail address in both the user account ID and incoming mail server slots in the Internet control panel. If I input the pop address, I get that in both the user account ID and incoming mail server lines.

If I try to change the lines in the Internet control panel, the setup assistant overrides it. Ditto for the configuration manager.

Either way, we can’t get or send e-mail. How do I get around this catch-22?

After it asks for your email address the first time, it should take you to the next screen whick will have your email address already populated without your domain (ie: @myisp.com). This is also the screen where you need to input the password. Depending on your ISP, you may need to add the domain name along with your password. My previous ISP (SBC) required this, my current ISP does not. Once you get past this the next screen asks for the pop and smtp servers. If anything is already populated, just change them to what you need (ie: pop.myisp.com / smtp.myisp.com). After that you're done unless your ISP requires server authentication. If it does, you will not be able to send until you check this option. To do this go to Tool->Accounts and then click on the tab that says email. You should only have one option here unless you have multiple email addresses w/ different pop/smtp servers. At any rate, select the one you need authentication for and right click->properties. I can't remember the tab name, but it is the 2nd tab from the left. At the bottom is a box that says "my server requires authentication." Check this box, apply changes and exit.

If you need the current pop/smpt server addresses, go to your ISP website and look them up. With many ISPs this info is listed in the FAQ.

EDIT: Just noticed this is A) an old thread and B) it's for Mac. That's the setup for OE in Windows. I have no idea if it is anywhere near the same thing... I haven't touched a Mac in years.
