Yesterday I was using mplayer - a voice chat program - and went into a room labeled Testing where I though I could test my microphone. A man in the room replied that my sound was coming through fine and said, "You must be from Michigan or Minnesota." I probably should have suspected something but instead replied, "That's pretty good. How did you know that>" Immediately my screen was taken over by a large message "LOADING 176.8KB" with a progress bar included. I feared the worst and tried everything to disrupt what was going on. At one point a lot of flashing and sound occurred with some message about the exterminator. Finally I ended up in a British site -- appeared to be a portal (virgin.com). And after much experiments, I worked my way back to control of things. MY QUESTIOM here is:
1) What do you think took place?
2) Since I have Zone Alarm installed, wouldn't that usually block out some external intervention?

All comments would be appreciated since I was not a happy camper when all this was going on. I'm also wondering if there are any leftover problems on my computer.

I have no idea. It did not occur to you to turn off the machine? If you are on a dialup I would call the phone company and check for any recent charges. There are some sites that will dial overseas using your modem and you are none the wiser. I would also contact the webmaster of the site you where at to help him help his users.

Good Luck.

BTW Do you think the guy that made ZA can get around it?

last thought do a complete virus scan of your system with an updated program.

Edit: Do you have that url?

ya arcee
I wouldnt mind having that url myself I like challenges like this.
but what tram said does make sense I would first check with the phone company and see if any long distance calls were made while this happened, also do you keep any credit cards numbers or bank numbers on your computer,if so check with all of them, this exterminator might of went through your harddrive looking for something to take.
if your not having any problems yet I wouldnt think theres much to worry about now.
but thats just my opinion
