Okay guys, here's a mind-bender for ya. (keep in mind throughout this this is a school network, and i have no access to the proxy server) I have 2 windows 2003 servers, two nics in each, 1 nic of each connected to a single switch (call it the internet switch). The other nics on each server connect to other networks through their own switches. Both servers, up until today, were able to communicate with the internet through the school's proxy server. starting today, the internet stopped working. i can ping the proxy server's ip address fine, and i can ping THROUGH the proxy, to other web sites liek google or totse, but when i try to use the proxy to browse, it will not work. both server exhibit this. i thought it was a proxy issue (i have no access to the proxy itself, only know the ip/port it runs on). it cannot be a proxy issue, though, as all the other workstations connected to the 'internet switch' work perfectly fine, after reboots, after IP renewals, no problems. below is a list of what i have tried, to no avail.

reset proxy settings

rebooting the server
disabling the NIC and re-enabling
renewing the ip address
statically setting a valid ip address
un-firewalling the nic
using a different nic <-- not my idea, teachers.... so, if anybody could help me out, please do....

Have you tried seeing if you can resolve names...ie/ www.novell.com (http://www.novell.com) from those machines?

Also, have you tried changing the proxy settings in IE to automatically detect or manually specified the settings?
