I'm not sure if this is in the right forum or not, but here goes........
Many times when I click to open a web page, I'm told in the bottom left corner that it is searching for "proxy settings". What is that all about? I'm using a cable modem, which is running two computers, although they have seperate IP addresses, we pay extra for the second address.
Any help will be muchly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Dave.

Thanks Tram.
I find the link to this page (Cyber Tech Help) one of the hardest pages to get to!!!

Damhna, Thanks.
You are exactly right in your first paragraph, but I'm not sure where to look for the protocols and connection settings, do you need the info that is in the network from the control panel??

lufbra,
The protocols that are likely to be on your system are ::: TCP/IP NetBEUI IPX/SPX
These can be found in the Network settings in the control panel. Protocols are assigned to an adaptor (modem/network card).
Your proxy settings I think from memory on Win98 can be found by rightclicking and selecting properties on your DUN Connection icon.

Thanks Mishy, just went into Networks through the control panel and this is what I found in the "configuration"......
Client For Microsoft Networks
Microsoft Family Logon
AOpen LAN ALN-325 10/100 Base-TX Fast Ethernet Adapter
The last one here is repeated again.
TCP/IP-> AOpenLAN ALN-325 10/100 Base-TX Fast Ethernet Adapter
This last one is also repeated again..
Hope this helps.
Dave.

Thank you Damhna.
I opened up both TCP/IP that are here, and this is what I found....
Advanced Property Value....
Allow Binding To ATM, "No" is checked off.
Bindings.....
Client For Microsoft Networks....checked off.
For the second part of your post.
I went into the connections and at the bottom I saw LAN settings, so I clicked on that and the only thing checked off is "automatically detect settings"
File And Printer Sharing For Microsoft Network.....checked off.
Microsoft Family Logon......checked off
Side note here, by saying "checked off", I mean they are working this way.
Netbios......All is blank here.
IP Address......
Obtain IP Address automatically is checked off.
Wins Configuration......
At the bottom of this window, Use DHCP for Wins resolution is checked off, the "H" is underlined.
DNS Configuration....
Disable DNS is checked off.
Gateway.....
Nothing entered here at all.
I also looked at the second TCP/IP, the only difference to the first one was that in Bindings, the "File and Printer Sharing" is not checked off.
For the second part of your post, I went into Connections, and saw LAN settings at the bottom, so clicked on that. In that, "automatically detect settings" is checked off, nothing else.
I wouldn't call this a major problem, the delay is maybe 30-45 seconds, and it doesn't always do this, which makes it more frustrating than anything else, especially as we are using a cable modem!!
Thanks for all the help.
Dave.

Thank you Damhna, I really do appreciate all the help and time you have given to me on this subject.
I think I understand what you are saying, and I think that rather than get on the phone now and sart shouting at Mediaone (my cable server), I'll give it a few days, and see if the problem gets better by itself, or by them doing their own tweaks. The funny thing is, my wifes computer is set up to the same cable modem we have here, and although she has a seperate IP address, she isn't having the same problem, just my chuffin' luck I guess!!
Once again, many thanks for your help.
Dave.
