How to bump extensions for compatability with Firefox 1.0 releases.

If you have upgraded to Firefox version 1.0RC1, 1.0RC2 or 1.0 final and are experiencing problems with incompatible extensions, then this is for you!

When you find an extension you require but it has not been 'bumped' or repackaged for version 1.0 - perform the following actions:

Open Firefox (if not already open), the Extension Manager and a folder on your PC.

Right click on the link for the extension and select 'Save Link As' and then save it to the folder on your pc. (It usually saves with it's extension name.)

Now right click on the file in your folder and 'Open With' - WinZip. (Any archive program, I used WinZip). You will now see at least 2 files in the WinZip applet, right click on the install.rdf file and Open in Notebook.

When you have the file open in Notebook, look for em:maxVersion and change it to "1.0" (ie from "0.10.1" to "1.0") Close the document and it will prompt for 'Save Changes' - Save and Close.

Winzip will now prompt for Save Changes, again, Save and Close.

Now open the Firefox Extension Manager and Drag and Drop the file from your folder on your PC to the Extension Manager. You will now see the installation panel for the extension, click install and you have now got a 'bumped' version of the extension installed which was incompatible 2 minutes ago. Well Done! Close and Open Firefox and that extension is now operable.

Occasionally, Firefox will not work because the extension isn't configured for bumping, as I discovered when I bumped 'Flowing Tabs'. If you experience any difficulties, ie Firefox crashes, don't panic, Open Firefox in safe mode (Start > Programs > Mozilla Firefox > Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode) - (this method of opening disables all themes and extensions). Open the Extension Manager and Uninstall the extension you've just bumped, close and open Firefox normally and everything is back to normal. I have bumped about 30 extensions and only had the 1 problem.

By doing this, you do not have to wait for the creators to bump their extensions for availability to one and all.

Hope this helps.
