repair of IE 5
About 2 months ago I got a new hard drive. My tech/server installed it and at the same time put on IE5.5 When I found out the IE repair option was gone, I uninstalled it and reinstalled IE5. (someone sent me a link)
Now IE5 does show up under my add and remove programs. But when I clicked on it to repair I got a message saying> Can not be repaired, Please run setup again to reinstall all components. I do not know the path to take now..? Does that mean uninstall it and start from scratch, or go to my download file and click on setup?? I cant even find IE5 on Microsoft site, as they are pushing 5.5.. Appreciate your thoughts on this.. keep it simple please.. carol |

Open Windows Explorer
Go to C:\Windows Update Setup Files Double Click on ie5setup.exe Click I accept the agreement Click Next Click on Install Minimal or customize your browser. Place a check in each box you want the features. NOTE: Anything that is in Bold print has already been installed. Check these boxes to reinstall those features. Click Next after checking all boxes you want. A "Reinstall all items" box will appear. Click Reinstall all componets. Click OK and follow the instructions. A couple of things to think about. One make sure that you turn off your AV program first. Also you may have to connect to the internet to download some componets, the install wizard will direct you if this is the case. Make sure that you disconect from the internet before restarting your PC after the install. There is a way to add Internet Explorer to the list in Add/Remove programs, it involes going into the registry. It is not uncomman for some files to become damaged thus the repair tool does not repair, IAW its no big deal. If for some reason you can not find the ie5setup.exe file you will have to download the entire program again. MSIE 5.5 SP1 is the latest version. Check this forum for the link. Post back if you have any questions. Edit just reread your post. If need be go here to download IE5.01 SP1 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...eleaseid=22365 I would not install any eairler version. The instruction for a reinstall are the same for your version. Good luck ------------------ <IMG SRC="http://tram2dotcom.bizland.com/tramsmokes.gif" border=0> ------------------ [This message has been edited by tramtwo (edited 23 November 2000).]

Tram,,
Your instructions were the BEST !! I almost thought I was going to get off with out a hitch..but that didn't happen.. I followed your great instructions.. I clicked all the bold boxes and may have added one or two, got the message that window med. player had to be installed, to connect to the net, which I was.(didn't say what version though hope its not 7), It installed it and I NEVER got a box that said "Reinstall all items", Everything got installed and I was waiting for reinstall all items window to come up next but then I heard my shut down music and before I could disconnect the net I got the message I preformed an illegal operation~~~Mod OLK32.DLL at 017f;7ff38ae5 I guess that is because I was still on the net?? So , would you call it a success??? I was never in a love/hate relationship till I got this puter...thanks again Tram. |

Not sure about that error message.
Try the repair tool. Once again make sure that your AV is not running. That error message may have just been a fluke best to try the repair tool and then put the browser through its paces. I think the default media player download is 6.4??
