I recently moved to Egypt and after getting a local ISP tried to logon to their server.
But my modem doesn't even detect a dial tone. I have a DELL Inspiron laptop with a Psion Global Gold Card. The strange thing is that everything works fine when I use the office phone line. The problem only exists with my home phone. I have tried both tone and pulse dialing (although I'm pretty sure the phone line uses tone dialing). The phone plug is fine as it is the same used for the phone. I have tried for days now without success and am getting frustrated. Does anybody have any ideas?

Hello chris,
If your modem works fine on one line but not on another, I'd say it's the phone line. If it were me, I'd be calling the people that own the phone lines and be asking them some questions.
Good luck.

Sometimes this can happen if they have the jack wired backwards. If you feel like it you can try reversing the wires. I have never been to Egypt so I don't know if they use red and green. Be careful there is about 52VDC on the line, well thats the case here in the states.

I get callers with this problem all the time!
Usually, though, it is due to a faulty modem/modem drivers or the phone line is just not plugged in, etc.
But that obviously does not apply to your case so this is what you can try:
1.Disable "wait for dialtone"in your dialer properties by do this:
[Go to] My Computer [Go to] Dial Up Networking [Go to] right click on the dialer/Connectoid (that would be the icon for the dial-up) [Go to] properties [Go to] configure [Go to] Connection [Go to] uncheck "wait for dial tone
NOTE: if you have something other than win95/98 you'll have to email me on that on!
2. Adding commas BEFORE the number (ex: ,,000-0000) I like to use two but sometimes some people need three or four comas (by the way that pauses the dialing)
3. Anything thing beyond this may be a telco (telephone comp. issue)
NOTE: To be sure it is a telco issue try calling the number on a regular phone and see if you get those crazy tones your modem usually makes.
Hope that helps ya!
