Running Windows ME.

When I turn the computer on, the system boots up apparently normal, but immediately after the desktop with the program icons comes up the computer freezes. Key board is dead, mouse is dead.

Tried starting in 'safe mode' -- but the same thing happens. Booting / start up seems normal, until the desktop with program icons comes up (in safe mode) than immediately freezed.

Is it possible to start the computer up with step by step confirmation so that I can see what is getting loaded that is causing the crash? I have a suspicion that there is an adware/spyware/problem program that has snuck on -- now I can't get the computer even started to scan and remove. If I can at least get is partially started I can take it from there.

HELP!! Kids are screaming about homework, wife is screaming about no email....

If you made a boot disk or you can get a command prompt, you can do this: (If you didn't and you can't, at the point where you choose option 4, choose option 1 (help) instead)
(the following is from the boot disk help file)
If you have followed the steps outlined in the Safe Mode
Troubleshooter and are still unable to start Windows normally,
do the following:

1. Close this Help file.
2. At the command prompt, type:
scanreg /restore
and then press ENTER.
3. Select the most recent backup date, and then choose Restore.

Don't forget to eject the disk right after the reboot.
Good luck
