View Full Version : Transition from AOL Questions/Problems

I have a friend that is a subscriber to AOL and she would like to use FISPs instead of AOL.
(one of those free vs. pay decisions: hard choice!)
I have had her try to access some of my dialups while her AOL software remains actively installed on her computer but have not had any success making connections. The only thing that I can think of is that the AOL software controls the modem port or something. Short of uninstalling the software, is there a test that I can run or is there a way to allow her to use AOL and other FISP software dialups? I am not sure if this matters but she is running ME.

Your thoughts,

well I guess the bad news first I been reading that most the free ISPs will be shutting down after Christmas or changing over to pay services.
SO with this in mind I would go after one of the big ones, the easiest one that comes to mind is Juno they have a banner internet or you can pay to go bannerless,I know Juno will work with aol I had set up both with out any problems, so that's my recommendation
plus you can get Juno for a lot less then aol.

Ok then make a simple dial up say to your computer, that will atleast tell you if her system is still capable to make a dunn.
start bar then settings then dial up networking make a new connection,I set one up to dial mine and it works fine.
hope this helps

We have gotten that far. When the computer dials up through the DUN, there is the login validation and then it drops out due to -- it thinks -- pswd error. HOwever, we have gone through the login and pswd case sensitivity time and again.

Had a mention of a corrupted dynamic linked lib (rasapi32.dll) that could be part of the problem. I don't know if the AOL software possibly does something that may corrupt this file but it is worth a shot to reload the cd and try for a fresh copy. The other side is to uninstall the software (AOL) and try it again.

it all seems so strange that I feel it is going to be something sidesplitting simple.

Execio, whenever u make a new dialup connection, make sure to check the DNS settings. AOL makes it's own, and as such, any time you make a new DUN, it will have aol's defaults in there. On the FISP page that you want to create a DUN for, ask them what the DNS settings are, etc.

Rosie,
Excuse my ignorance this late in the eve, but where can I find the DNS settings under win98? under ME? I know I have used them or heard of them but nothing is coming through right now.
