View Full Version : IE 5.5 hangs at graphic intensive sites.

As the subject line states, my Internet Explorer 5.5 hangs when I scroll through graphics and regular webpages.

I have narrowed the problem down though, no idea how to fix it yet.

Problem and causes:

Internet Explorer 5.5 hangs when my graphics card acceleration is at maximum. (goto My computer, right click, Performance, Graphics). When the slider is at maximum or one level below maximum my IE will hang repeatedly.

Now if I slide the slider to minimum or one notch above minimum I will not have this problem. At minimum (or no hardware aceleration) scrolling through webpages is choppy at best. One notch above and webpages do not freeze and the scrolling is smooth. Fixed? No.

I am a gamer (Everquest, Counter-Strike, AQ2). When my Graphics aceleration is at minimum or one notch above minimum I cannot run any games. It sends me an error message "No 3D Devices found".

So it is a catch 22 here. With my graphics down I can look at webpages and no games. With them up I can run games but IE will freeze while browsing sites.

This would be so bad if I didn't have to restart every flipping time to change the settings.

As an FYI I will give my PC specs so an drivers or updates you can point me to would be helpful:

800mhz PIII (not important)
Voodoo3 3000 or 2500 I am not sure. It is the 16meg card.
IE 5.5. The latest version.
Windows 98. Latest Verson "c".

Any help would be great, thanks.

Taylor

well I would suggest you downloading DirectX 7a it sounds like your direct X is courpt, since your running stright win98 its might of happened when you installed IE5.5
I do know that directX 8 is out but I havent tried it yet, so I dont want to recommend something I dont know about.

ironsides,

I have DX8 installed right now. The only reason for that is that Everquest (one of my many games) requires it to run.

This all started happening after I formatted due to disk problems. In any case, I was not having this problem before with IE 5.5 and DX8.

I think it is my vid drivers, but I am not sure.

Ok this is what I did to fix it.

I followed the link to 3dfx's site (thanks) and d/l'd the latest drivers. Install. Reboot. Problem still happens.

So I started with the oldest drivers and worked my way up. Some where non compatable, but I found that the 1.05 version worked with both my games and IE 5.5.

Seeing as how this is a very specific problem I haven't heard of anyone eles with this kind of trouble. If you have a Voodoo3 3000, DX8, and your IE 5.5 is hanging I would suggest downloading th 1.05 version not the latest.

Well anyway thanks for all the help!

Regards,

Taylor

P.S. this is deffinately a site I will recommend to friends. Not only is it technically helpful but the staff are friendly as well. Thanks again!

For what it's worth, IE5.5 is less stable than IE5.1. I was running IE5.5, was have some problems, and switched back to IE5.1...now no problems. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

thank you very much your praise is very welcomed LOL
I would imagine that something is incompatible with your hardware causing this problem.
But thank you for telling us what it took to get it fixed.
