Sporadic connectivity

My roommate at my crashpad had a cable modem installed the other day. I was not home but they used my laptop to setup the connection. Now my connection to the internet either by IE or Mozilla is sporadic. When my laptop boots it seems to hang on a line that says "Client Mac ADDR: ....." and finally gets to loading XP. Sometimes I receive a message "connection refused..." It seems to just hang. I can reload/refresh and sometimes it will load the page, sometimes not. And sometimes it behaves as it should. I cannot find a reason for this unpredictable behavior. Prior to this, when I used my laptop at home (not my crashpad) with my cable modem there, I had no problems. I used Spybot to clean a few things up but it did not cure this problem. I ran HJT. I'll paste it below in case it helps. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey not everybody at once. Funny thing though. I cleaned it up at the hotel the other night - removed all of the spyware and other crap. It ran great. Ran fine at home, too. But as soon as I connected to the internet at my crashpad it slowed down again. I ran Spybot and Adaware. Then I downloaded SpywareBlaster after I cleaned up the laptop. It is running smooth now. We'll see if it lasts.
