Hey everyone. I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I'm trying to find out if there is a way to lock down the internet history so that a basic local machine user cannot delete them. Anyone know how to do this? We've had some issues at work with people performing some "illegal" actions, and want to make it so only those of us that are administrators can clean out the history folders. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. As always, thanks!

history is not the only place where this info is stored, antivirus logs, firewall logs, index.dat, are just a few. Cannot delete all tracks.
Also there are lots of software out there that will keep track of employees usage and does not require the use of history files to see. Do a search in google using keylogger as keyword and you will get a mess of alternatives.

any kind of shareware is unauthorized on our network. How would you go about viewing the history in an index.dat file? Basically I need any way of being able to read the history of internet usage on any user, at any time. And they must not be able to remove those files to try and cover their tracks.

They were not all shareware. Most were pay utilities and if there is a problem with employees, the the company should authorize its use expecially before there is a lawsuit, depending upon the content being viewed and how it is being used.
However if you consider the keyloggers programs shareware then you will not be able to view index.dat since it also takes an outside program. Here again search google using view index.dat as keywords.
Also you can get an attachment to the keyboard that will keep track of what is being viewed. See this (http://www.keyghost.com/)

See these registry hacks (http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/537/). You can modify the registry to lock any changes to the history settings. This will keep someone from easily wiping the history, but if someone is determined they can do it. The other drawback is that if someone uses a browser other than IE, this doesn't affect them.
Also, it seems that if you are looking for an internet history the company firewall could provide some tracking and control.
