Hi;
I am helping to clean a friend's Win2k SP4 machine from 450+ malware, viruses, trojans. System is AOpen mobo, 1GB RAM, 2.53 Mhz P4, nVidia graphics card...

After having removed an old, garbeled Norton SysWorks manually (Uninstall didn't do it) installed ZoneAlarm & Norton AV 2005; basically it's running fine. BUT:

Add/Remove Programs (in Control Panel) comes up, the list of little icons comes up BUT NO PROGRAM NAMES at all! The highlighted entry shows all the other standard text and the Change/Remove button ok. BUT NO PROGRAM NAMES!

Have done quite some googeling and searched MS support site; no big help. Found info on the Uninstall registry key; the values are all there and they store the names okay.

Has anybody an idea? This is BURNING :(:( under my - you know where.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

AnnMarie,

Thanks again.
I didn't have to go through all of the long MS doc you pointed me to. After re-registering appwiz.cpl I checked it's registry keys, they were all okay. Then the document spoke of doing one of two things depending on IE5 or IE6 being installed. I had downloaded and upgraded to IE6 yesterday - I thought at least. I ran what the doc says for IE6 and ended up with an error message saying it couldn't do it; the message recommended to un- and re-install IE.
So I uninstalled IE6 from the Add/Remove box; I could tell the entry by the icon ;). Worked fine and now I have IE5.5 on the box. Will try later to update to IE6 from the CD I have.

AND: The Add/Remove Program box has all textual entries back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I figure it's night in NZ now, correct? So sleep tight. You have new fan in Wisconsin, USA.
