Hi Dashboy
You can't use any of the connecting hardware? These days a hub would be a minimum, all a hub is, is an interconnection point for UTP cables.
So if you can't use this, the only option is to set up a thin ethernet network (thinnet) using co-axial cable and BNC connectors. You've not mentioned wireless is this OK, the additional hardware would far exceed just a hub.
You can't use generic computers? What does this mean? You must use some particular brand? Which brand? Why? This doesn't make sense.
You might like to read a networking tutorial at http://www.lantronix.com/learning/networking.html and check out some networking course notes at http://www.studynotes.net/indnet.htm
We would be happy to answer your question, if you could explain what it is a little better. BF

On a side note: Thinnet rules :) coax and BNC terminated on all ends thats classic stuff! Next thing ya know some one will want to know how to set up a token ring.

Hi Dashboy
As a follow on to your PM, I believe you are being asked to setup a thinnet network. See http://www.ictp.trieste.it/~radionet/ghana1998/CABLING/THIN.HTM for some details. BF
