modem hangs on dial-up

hi
I've just been round to my mates house cause he said he couldn't dial up..checked all his settings..seem to be fine..the modem dials but then hangs and just seems to stop..the screen still says dialling..but the seems to be no answer..I've checked and replaced the cable with one I know works..I was getting No Dial Tone error 680 until I unchecked the wait for dial tone option..
any help would be appreciated as it's driving me nuts! the system is running XP home

many thanks

mcdodd

My first question is 'Are you getting a dialtone'? If you plug a phone into the modem does it work? Have you checked the device manager console to see if it is reporting any problems with the modem?
