Hey all.

I need to get into Windows and copy some system files to a thumb drive. Unfortunately, these files are "Currently being used" by Windows. To make matters worse, you can't restart in MS-DOS mode like you could in the good old Win 9x days.

Are there any ways to do this? Most of what I've read involves making a boot disk or burning programs like Knoppix to a CD.

Are these the only ways to get my system files, or are there other, more simple ways that don't involve making crazy boot disks/CD's?
What would you guys recommend?

Thank you very much.

Welcome to CTH

Use a Windows 98 boot disk is the easiest. Then you can copy in DOS. Before you do you need to "UNHIDE" system files so you can see them.

Bootdisk.com HERE (http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm) is a good place to get a boot disk.

Download the file Windows 98 Custom, No Ramdrive, then double click on the file and it will extract the files to your clean floppy. Then boot with the floppy.

Awesome, thanks.

One question though...Will my PNY USB "Pin" drive work in DOS?

NO

You will need some DOS USB drivers they are hard to come by and untested but you may want to try these. Before you do anything to make sure it works.
