Hello all, this is my first time here so please be gentle.
I am trying to set up a peer to peer network of 7 computers wirelessly. Here is my dilemma:

Internet access will be made through a wireless access point. I would like the router to hook to this and provide it to my computers (which access the router wirelessly)

the reason I need to do this is that the wireless internet is provided free as part of our city infrastructure, but I need to share files and peripherals between just my computers and not give access to everyone in the city. Is there a way for me to do this as I am stumped. My router only gives me few options for internet connection: cable dsl static ip dynamic ip but no wireless connection.

If you can, please help

I'll start you off and hopefully others will pipe in (I know xircom is back around and he has more experience with this type of install than I do)

Its sounds like your looking for a setup something like this:

Wireless AP <=====> router (WAN Port) router (LAN Port 1) <=====> PC 1
...
router (LAN port x) <=====> PC x
I believe you'll need something that functions as a wireless bridge instead of an AP, but I'm not sure. (This is where we need someone with a little more expertise)

From the routers point of view it doesn't know whether the traffic ends up over wireless or not. The question is how does what router attaches to manage IP addresses.

To use your diagram for confirmation:

Wireless AP <=wireless signal=> router (WAN Port)
router (LAN Port 1) <=wireless signal=> PC 1...
router (LAN Port x) <=wireless signal=> PC x...

just to show that there are no wires at all in this setup. (hopefully)

I will look up info on wireless bridges so that I'll be more familiar with them. I knew they made bridges for wired networks, but I didn't even think about having them in a wireless config. Thanks for putting that into my head :)

I think I may have it after reading up on wireless bridges. I'm thinking I'll have to attach a bridge to the WAN port on the router, that way the bridge will feed internet to the router and the internal network can interoperate and receive internet behind the router:

Wireless AP <=wireless signal=> wireless bridge
wireless bridge <=network cable=> router (WAN Port)
router (LAN Port 1) <=wireless signal=> PC 1...
router (LAN Port x) <=wireless signal=> PC x...

I'll try it tomorrow and let you know if it works. Again thanks. :)

Hi Buddy / zip

zip thansk for the mention. try looking at a Dlink DSL-604T

Router comes as 192.168.1.1 (standard) with built in ADSL

Logon to the router and change the IP to 192.168.10.1 this will then set the DHCP Range to 192.168.10.1 to 192.168.10.254 have all the computers set automaticlly optain in TCP this will get the router to issue the correct ip address and dns address. now set the SSID to say your company name or office name and set the channell number. Both Router and Computer must match. Once you have wireless communications you can then set-up your workgroup using the same name as your ssid this will then allow computer sharing (z1p digrame is correct and give your all the details) "Note if you set a wep key or wpa they must all match otherwise you will get not connection" also watch our for Windows XP service Patch2 this will kick you wireless out check the services wireless configurator zero and microsoft firewall.

Sorry Chaps

I did not read this correctly. The Acess point is already their so you need a DLink AWL-2000 Access Point / Bridge; set the Lan ip address to any say 192.168.10.1 and the dhcp setting to match but the wan address will be the existing access point this will pass ip traffic out to the internet yet route local traffic around the lan. all the rest of the rules apply ssid ; channel number wep security etc..

check out www.dlink.co.uk or www.dlink.com they also have a ftp site and you will find all information on wan-lan setup.
