View Full Version : Router blocking one specific public IP

Hello All,

I hope someone has seen this before and has a solution. I can't connect to my website from any computer on my home network. It won't download web pages, connect to ftp or download email from the server. I can view any other website with no problem and I have no problem downloading my email on my ISP. I've narrowed the problem down to my router (SpeedStream ss2602). If I connect to the Internet on dialup or connect the cable modem directly to any of my computers without the router, I have full access to the server. I've had this router for about 1 1/2 years and have never had a problem like this and it was working fine until a few nights ago. No settings on the router or the server had been changed. Since I can connect to the server without the router, I don't believe the server would be banning my IP.

I have rebooted the router and cable modem, flashed the router's firmware and also reset the router to factory defaults and nothing fixed it. I suppose the obvious solution would be to buy a new router, but...

Money is tight this time of year.
Buying a new router wouldn't satisfy my curiosity as to why this is happening.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't get it...Just for sh*ts and giggles, I dialed up and logged into the server's control panel to check for banned IPs. "All" was listed. I don't know how or why....I never did it. Strange thing is still...why would it ban me when I'm connected to the router, but not when I'm connected straight to the cable modem?....My public IP is still the same either way. And no one else had any problems accessing the site. *scratching head*

Well, thanks anyways!

Hello Everyone.

Hi Degs....Thank you for the welcome!

So...I get home from work tonight and go to work on my site and the same thing is happening again. I dialed up and logged into CPanel to check IP blocking again and there isn't anything being blocked. I then connected directly to the cable modem without the router and could connect to my site with no problem.

I don't get it!!! Anyone have any insight on this??

TIA

COuld you give some info on the network.

Is this server/site on a network or a webhost?

Does your ISP give you a different IP Address from when you use a Router or connect Directly?

Check this using IPCONFIG

Hi Degs,

The site is on a web host (shared hosting on Northtrex.com). I get the same timeout when I try to go to the root IP of 69.93.230.98, so I would guess that I would not be able to access anyone's site that is on that same shared IP.

The IP that I get from my ISP is pretty consistent all the time. I get the same IP with the router disconnected and then when I renew the IP.

Thank you for your time...This is driving me nuts! I can't imagine why my router would interfere with only this one IP.

Best regards,

RCS,

What are you getting exactly, timeout connecting to server or cannot find server?
Have you tried connecting through the router, then check your logs at you server to see what it shows for that period. The server logs may provide some insight as too why you are failing to connect. Also, check the router logs for any information that might indicate why the connection is failing.

As a test, try disabling the router's firewall and see if that makes a difference. though, you really want he firewall up and running for normal use.

Have you tried running one of the oneline bandwidth tests with and without the router in the picture? If you can access other sites just fine this is most likely not the problem, but it never hurts to check.

Hello again,

When I left for work Saturday morning, I was unable to connect to the server. When I got home and booted up, it downloaded email off the server so I tried browsing the site and connecting to ftp and it went great. I'm about ready to throw the router out in the driveway and run the Suburban over it....lol.

Degs, I checked the other night when you asked me if I could connect by proxy and it did. Thanks for the link.

z1p, I get a "Operation timed out while trying to connect to racecitysynthetics.com". Tried looking at server logs and couldn't open them...will try again later after the race.

Speed test is great with the router in and out. Router doesn't give me an option to disable the firewall, only to quit logging hacker attempts.

Thanks again.

I never did figure out why the router was blocking my site. After my last post, it worked fine for about 4 weeks, then I came home one day and it was blocking me again. Bye, bye router! It got replaced that night.
