Hai,

My collegue use windows 2000 pro. he is using DSL line for internet. cool.

In the absence of DSL, when he connect to the internet through dial up(internal modem) the system gets restarted immediately.

And once it is restarted, second time it connects to the internet.

He use to update windows regularly and update antivirus definition also.

what could be the problem.

thanks in advance.

I would suggest it may be a resource conflict caused by the internal modem. The reboot may reserve the required (irq/memory address) for the modem so next time it connects OK.
To check, right-click My Computer, select "Manage".
Select System Tools>System Information>Hardware Resources>Sharing/Conflicts
Also take a look at the logs while in there
System Tools>Event Viewer>System

Dear smurfy,

I have checked as you said, In sharing/conflicts it shows like below,

IRQ 18 -----> NVIDIA Vanta 16MB(Compaq)
IRQ 18 -----> HSP56 MicroModem

I dont know about first one but I am sure second one is the internal modem.

I understood that there is a conflict between these two.

Please advice me how to change/correct this IRQ conflict.

Waiting for reply,

Thanks in advance.

Hai,

I have changed the slot of the modem in MotherBoard.

Now there is no IRQ conflict now.

But the problem remain same.........

I am just repeating the problem, when he connect to the internet through dial up(internal modem) the system gets restarted immediately.

And once it is restarted, second time it connects to the internet.

Waiting for any assistance.
