things running slow since installing ethernet card

In preparation for broadband being installed next week I`ve put in a network card .
Since I`ve put it in, things have slowed down quite a bit. eg: when I double click on IE on the desktop, it takes about a minute for the dun connect box to appear. Also while on the web, if I have to click on a box "eg add reply" like here, it also takes about a minute before anything happens.
Should I have made any changes to any settings when I installed the card?

hi fitzy

I'll have a stab at this before I pass you on to the Hardware forum

Has installing the drivers for the NIC meant that your C: drive is now nearly full?

drive c has got 35gigs free.
btw running windows me. amd athalon 800
when I installed it I didnt have to put in the drivers that came with it on a floppy because widows detected it itself.Theres been a suggestion from someone but he`s not sure that the card is looking for an ip address which it wont be able to access until the cable modem is installed next week.

Did you get a Driver disk with the NIC?

Try removing the card in Device Manager, then reboot,
when it detects the card use the proper driver disk to install the NIC.

Having a NIC without being connected to a network will always slow you down with any Windows operating system as Windows will desperately search for one. Go in to Device Manager and disable it until you get your network configured.

In my experience a NIC would only delay during Boot or Logon, not after.

Just a note, installing the NIC would have added a couple of network protocols to your Network Properties which are not required for the dial-up. (NetBeui & ipx protocols.)
Removing these from network properties (or at least un-binding from the dial-up adapter) should improve speed without needing to remove NIC.

I have had this problem for about 2 years. It is directly related to owning an autosensing network card (nic). When I plug it into a hub progress returns to normal without rebooting. I installed a 10m nic on the same machine (for grins) and this phenomenon stopped even when I was not connected to a hub.
