I've been trying to connect to my home network, while on the road. The programs I'm trying to use are realVNC & PC Anywhere. I've tried port forwarding and have had no luck. I haven't had any success so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Max

Welcome to CTH

You should be able to do this with realVNC. Does your home router have a static IP address? Because you need to enter the IP address of the machine that is running the VNC server into the client VNC machine (In your case this will be the external IP address of the router). If it changes you need some way of finding it.

Also you need to have port forwarded the right ports, from memory it is port 5001 for the first VNC connection.

I guess it is something similar with PC anywhere. BF

If you don't have a static IP, you could use the free service dyndns.org. Its a free DNS service along with a program that runs on your PC that updates their DNS server with your external IP. Also, more and more router support this service, so you don't even need to run any software on your PC, you just need to configure the router to report its IP.

Personally I would configure VNC to use a non-standard port, so that someone scanning for open ports won't find one on your system on the usual VNC port.

I have a dlink router and found that it did not work quite the way I would have expected. I found that to get port forwarding to work I also needed to configure the firewall not to block that port. I would expect port forwarding to take precedence over the firewall, but for my router that didn't seem to be the case.

Hi

Normally you would need a static IP from your ISP provider for this to work, however if you don't have a static you can use the Microsoft IPSEC settings in windows 2000 / xp but that such a pain; so look at SSH Sentinal

SSH Sentinel 1.4 Release Notes

SSH Sentinel VPN client is an IPSec (Internet Protocol Security) client software product for VPN solution OEM manufacturers and end-user markets that fully implements certificate-based authentication and public-key infrastructure. The new software version 1.4 increases ease of integration and reduces work required when deploying the VPN solution into customers' existing IT infrastructures. SSH Sentinel provides an effective way to secure remote access into the corporate network. The focus of SSH Sentinel 1.4 has been to provide a comprehensive selection of features and compatibility with a great number of third-party solutions, and also to demonstrate to administrators and end users how a complex technology such as IPSec can be harnessed in an easy-to-use application, to provide a smooth remote working experience.

The SSH Sentinel 1.4 release contains the essential VPN for remote working. This is the basis of our software, allowing us to introduce new network security technology for mainstream operating systems. SSH Sentinel development is an ongoing process; so far we have only scratched the surface. Most applications of VPN technology are very simplistic compared to what is possible. We are about to enter the era of managed VPNs and hopefully soon after the era of secure Internet, where the true potential of IPSec is realized. Until then, please enjoy this remote working software and have a safe journey.

This works with both Broadband / DSL / ADSL and Modem Dial-up. I have number of sites using this it works very well cost about £119.00 do a search on Google.

Still no success connecting, using VNC. I have forwarded ports 5800 5900. I can connect inside of my lan using the internal IP, and i can even hit it using the static ip from within the lan. But anyting outside of my own network and just cannot get to it. Also, i do have a static IP.
Me = sad

Hi Max

An update on my previous post. The default port for RealVNC's first connection is port 5901. BF
