Hi.
I am looking to connect my PC and laptop wirelessly using a router.
I already have an internet broadband connection with an ADSL modem.

I was looking at the WGR614 by netgear, but have been told that this
is not the right sort of router for an ADSL internet connection with a
modem that connects by USB??

What kind of router should I be looking for, and does it require a built in modem (even though I already have a modem)?

Can you please help me with this matter, or suggest another netgear
router that would be more suitable.

Thanks in advance
Dan

Hi Dan,

In order to use a router for what you want to do you need to relegate the usb modem to the spares shelf and purchase an ADSL Modem/Router/Wireless/Firewall, such as the Netgear DG834G. This router is so easy to use and set up, it does just what you want for you, and a big bonus is that you get a hardware firewall to shut out all those nasty trojans etc.
You will also need Wi-Fi cards for the PC and Laptop if you don't have them.

I don't need a PCI card for the PC that has the internet connection do I? Just a laptop card.
I have found a bundle, including a Netgear DG834G and a laptop card, for an amazing £88.

Do you recommend 54Mbps? Will it still provide a decent speed?

Hi Dan

That is many times the speed of your internet connection, so you should have no problems in that regard. At that price you can't go wrong. Perhaps you might like to wait for a reply from someone who has the same device for details of their experiences as far a reliability goes etc. BF

Hi Dan,
I'm using that router, how else would I know it's easy to set up!
The PC has the internet because the USB modem is plugged into it, with the router you connect a modem cable from your ADSL filter in the phone socket to the WAN connection on the router, that is why your USB modem is redundant and why your PC needs a Wi-Fi card unless you want to run ethernet cable to the PC from the router.
is it becoming clearer?

Jim.

Hi Dan

Check out the DLink G604T 54Mbs Wireless with 4 Port Hub and Firewall Nat/Chap with WEP and WPA + Free dLink PCMCIA Card for your Laptop; that way you can plug your Computer Direct in via your standard Network Port if you like or purchase a DLink G520+ Wireless Card; you get the free PCMCIA Card plug stright into your laptop and is very easy to configure all the less than £70.00 Ex VAT

I went for the Netgear bundle in the end. Price was too good to miss.
When I come to setting the new router/modem up, how do I configure my broadband connection to the new router?

Dan
You open Internet Explorer and type in the address of the router, which is http://192.168.0.1 then you set up your broadband on the first page all you need is your username and password for your ISP.
