I am trying to set container permissions on a share that will stop users from
creating folders anywhere in the container BUT at the same time be able to
create and edit files.I have set the share Permissions to all permutations
with special NTFS security permissions. The only way i can create a file and
edit it is to allow Create Folders/Append Data.
Any ideas guys, it`s driving me Mad!
Windows 2000 AD Domain Network.

How are you settings the permissions?
If you are in Security>Advanced>
Then you can set the permissions for a user/group.
Within that you can Deny Create Folders, but allow Create File / Write Data.

Hi degsy
Thanks for your reply.
I am in security advanced setting permissions for a test account(domain standard user account). OK,I can Not Allow Create Folders/append data, and Allow Create File/Write Data. This stops me from creating a folder and allows me to create a file which is fine but it can not be modified, unless the user has Modify permissons,if you do that you are back to square one as it toggles Create Folders/Append Data to on.
BTW i am not using the DENY switch at all as this is deemed bad practice, i am just not checking the allow box to remove the permission.
I think Microsoft decided that you cant create/modify/save a file unless you can create a folder to put it in, he he he.... ;)
What do ya think?
Many thanks

Saweeeed!
All you need to do is set the permissions for the group or user individualy in the Advanced permissions. e.g
Advanced>permissions>Highlight Joe Bloggs >View/Edit>set permissions to read and choose the Apply to dropdown box and choose for example this folder only>apply, click Add >choose Joe Bloggs again and set modify permissions on Files only this time from the dropdown box and so on.....
So thats it, you do it with miultiple individual permissions, best done with groups as you will be there all day otherwise. :rotflmao:
and so we go on
