Beep Codes

Happy post Thanksgiving for the US members and good day to all,

I was quitting an on line role playing game last night and it was taking forever so it seemed, so I restarted my computer (the 98SE Box) and now I can not get it to boot. I searched for beep codes but none of them seem to have an explaination for 2 short and one long. It sounds beep beep and hesitate beep, this is after the initial start up beep that is usual. Can someone think of a resolution with me please. It will restart with control alt delete but still won't boot. I have tried F8 ~ F10 and the delete key, escape and using the other display plug in on my video card. I did vauguely see on the screen once CHECKING NVRAM but can't even see that now. I put the OS disk in the CD drive and the start up disk in the A drive. Nothing. Thanks.

What model motherboard are you using?

Try entering the BIOS (setup) before POST (usually F2) and check that none of the settings have been changed. If it doesn't let you in the BIOS, it may need to be flashed. This is unlikely, but would explain a few things.

OH YOU ARE MAGNIFICENT!!!!!! Thanks Hypno. My settings are off, everything is huge, but I can see the monitor , wonderful wonderful!! You saved the day! Hurray! The computer used plug and play and found new hardware for nearly everything, but things are working properly now, at least as far as I can see. Thanks again. ~Pam

Thanks Hypnotize, You are still magnificent in my book, but I may have spoken too soon on the 'all ok'. I have to use F2 to boot up each time now and my security settings have changed but I am not quite sure how that change, or what it is, came about. Windows also is having a difficult time shutting down correctly. The system seems a bit slower, so I cleaned and defragged and ran Ad Aware and Spybot. I have AVG antivirus running and it does a scan at boot up and at the quick glance I get (because I don't know how to stop it mid way) it is fixing something as it scans in dos at boot up after I key F2. I was very happy to have my computer start up again but I think it may need some further attention. I am not super keen on all the settings but eventually figure out a way to get it back to 'normal'. I would be most greatful for any advise. Thanks again ~Pam

You get the beeps you described originally if you do not use F2 during boot, correct?

Also, exactly what security settings are you referring to and what about them has changed?

Assuming you are running the most current version of AVG and have updated recently (HINT ), see if there is anything about this scan logged in the Test Results section. If so, please post the information given to you into this thread and we will see what we can do.

Hi Hypno,

I get the same beeps and then hit F2 and boot up, if I don't hit F2, nothing happens. Well. CONTROL ALT DELETE WILL recycle it.

I accessed a secure site and when I attempted to access it again with another username and password it told me my security was corrupt. I called the webmaster and they said it was my security settings, I realize that is not alot of help. I was told I would get an email but didn't receive any. That is why I think my security has changed.

My AVG is up to date: (thanks, always nice to be reminded)

Results of Complete Test, date and time 11/29/04 23:01:55 :
Testing C:\ volume KITKAT serial XXXX-XXXX
C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\FWPKTLOG.TXT Cannot open; not checked!
C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\FWDBGLOG.TXT Cannot open; not checked!
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\SYMLCSYS.DLL Cannot open; not checked!
Test finished, duration 00:16:31.5 s
26286 objects tested, 0 found infected

The first two entries are not in the logs until I started with this inability to start up properly. The third one shows in all the log files daily.

I don't know how to check the bootscan log from AVG. I doesn't detect any viruses but as I said it is fixing something.

Sorry, I realize this isn't much info to go with... I rarely shut down the computer so I am coasting along but would like to figure out just what happened.

PS (edit) 'flashed!!??!!

From what I can gather from the Web, fwpktlog.txt and fwdbglog.txt are Internet log files created and used by ZoneAlarm, which I'm assuming you have installed on your PC. Having never used this program myself, I cannot say for sure that they are not necessary for ZoneAlarm to function, however it is my understanding that they can be cleared.

If you decide to delete these files, do so in Safe Mode (if you can). Personally, I think this will solve your AVG problem.

---------------

As for your 'security', I believe the Webmaster was referring to your Internet Security Level setting.

Run Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Security.

Click Default Level, Apply, OK. Try that setting.

How to repair 'corrupted' security settings anyway short of reinstalling Windows XP is beyond me, to be honest with you, Pam. You might want to try reinstalling Internet Explorer. Just a suggestion, though.

---------------

Finally, about your F2 related booting issue, I could not find any further information about your beep pattern, unfortunately. I still think that there is something going on with your BIOS. My only suggestion short of flashing the BIOS altogether would be to give clearing the CMOS a shot. See here for instructions. As for what it says about '15 seconds to 8 hours to lose it's data', 5 minutes is sufficient time, I assure you.

Best of luck to ya, Pam. I'm still here if you need me.

Thanks again, Currently I am booting after my 2 quick beeps hestitate and beep and then F2. I think it is my security settings, something went all funny, the security pop up that comes up when you enter a secure site pops up for everything, to include MSN and Yahoo. I reset the settings to default but it is something other than that, I will keep working away at it and post when I find the solution, hopefully I can. =)

Well time has past and I still am booting up using the F2 key. No resolution yet. The security problem I had getting to secure sites has fixed itself. I dare not take credit because if it was something I did , I am not sure what it was. Thanks very much for you support. and even on the 14th day Happy New Year to you . ~Pam

FWPKTLOG.TXT
its a Firewall Packet Log the other log I have no idea what it is but has something to do with your firewall I don't know whether it was created by a malicious program or the firewall itself.

FWDBGLOG.TXT
this file I tried to open on my computer and it says its being used by another program. Which most likely is ZoneAlarm you can delete all but one log that's created by ZoneAlarm ZLT06425.TMP it might be a different number or name on your computer if you don't have ZoneAlarm installed. It might be called something else depending on what type of firewall you have installed. The file FWPKTLOG.TXT can be opened on my computer that one is not locked. If you can open either one on your computer manually you might see what the logs contain.

SYMLCSYS.DLL
This is a Symantec product obviously you know that already since it says it right in the HijackThis log. One reason it might not be accessible by Anti-virus programs because it has to do with either the Symantec Firewall or Anti-virus program usually they don't allow other programs to open there files. But a file not opening or not allowing access could also be a sign of a virus infection or some other type of malicious program.

I have no idea how much computer knowledge you have but I hope this information helped out and was not a repeat of what you already know.

If nothing else, it is now bumped to the front page where hopefully it will be seen by someone else who may be able to help.
