Question Host PC lost internet connection while laptop okay in network

Hi. I set up a network (after lots of frustration) last week between my Windows XP PC and my Windows 98SE laptop. Everything has been running smoothly until this morning. I noticed my PC wasn't acting efficiently so I restarted it. After it had booted up I realized I had lost my internet connection on the PC. The laptop still has access. I have the 2 computers physically cabled to a wired router (LinkSys BEFSR41) and all the indictor lights say the connections are good.

Can any help or give suggestions? I am not the most computer savy person in the world but I can generally figure things out if given help.

Heidi

You might want to check and make sure no XP firewall settings or norton security "if you have that" or the like is blocking you from the internet. If that doesn't work try to release and renew your ip. You can do that by going to start/run in the command box type: ipconfig /release hit the enter key then type: ipconfig /renew That should try to pull an ip address along with dns server and the like. From there if you still can't reach the internet we can still have a better idea of what sort of networking issue it may be.

Still not working...

Hi, thanks so much for responding! I already have my firewall software disabled. Here's what I got when I did what you suggested:

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Network Bridge:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix....:
Autoconfiguration IP Address.......: 169.254.164.117
Subnet Mask:...........................: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway.......................:

Windows IP Configuration

An error occurred while renewing interface Network Bridge: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

I appreciate your advice!

Heidi

Ok is there a reason why you have the PC eathernet connection bridge'd? If you have some reason for this then never mind, but just two computers both running to a wired router you don't want a bridge. I would get rid of the bridge and just use the one eathernet most times named "local area connection". Here are two pretty nice Microsoft kb issues that show you how to A. Get rid of the bridge and B. Keep the network wiz from adding a bridge during setup. link one here and link two here so read those get rid of the bridge and post back. Let us know how its going. Good luck and hope that helps.
