i recently have been having this sound issue where the sound will go out for counter strike a game i play and ventrilo which is the chat program i use with it also and the only way to fix it is to restart the computer but on the other hand the sound still works for everything else including other games this issue also has happened just from ventrilo running so if someone could maybe please help me with this....thanks

Seriously though, sounds like you either have a flakey driver (go to the soundcard manufacturers website and download the newest ones) or your sound card needs a bit of attention.
The drivers will be the case if it persists on loads of different apps (that would predominantly be ones that are fairly recently written). If it's pretty random all across the board then it could be a physical issue.
If you are up to it, remove the sound card, give it and the mobo a healthy clean (with a spray duster or the like) and re-seat it. If you are fairly happy fiddling with the innards of your machine, give the edge contacts of the soundcard (where it goes in to the mobo) a GENTLE clean with a very benign cleaner (you can get special wipes for this at most local pc suppliers).
Also check all the connections of your speakers, a damaged cable or connector could give you similar problems to those described.
