failed to query TCP/IP settings plus other issues.

Toshiba lap top Satelitte 2595 CDS. Upgraded to Windows XP. Did not reformat etc.... Everything as it realtes to XP seems fine.
Tried to access internet via Linksys ethernet card. 10/1000 Integrated CardBus PC card. All LEDS are flashing. Device manager shows it is working properly. I uninstalled the card/software then reinstalled it. A couple of problems. I cannot access Internet Options when IE is open. I get a message telling me operation cancelled due to restrictions. I uninstalled Spybot as I did not see the area under Imunize to turn off. I do not see Windows Firewall as this version of XP is not SP2. Its an upgrade. When I try to repair my local network connection I get an error message saying Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed. The activity window does not show and info as sent or recd but the connection is showing as connected at a speed of 100 Mbps. If I click on supprt there are no address's ( IP, Subnet,Def Gateway etc...) I have tried to load them manually and also automatically. I see the ethernet card in device manager under Network adapters. Is this correct?

I also ran spybot before I uninstalled it and deleted 10 or so Spyware's.
After this computer can access the internet then I will set it up wireless w/ a Linksys adapter & router. I have my main PC on the router and it work fine( not wireless)

Thank you
Ron

Under IPCONFIG are you getting zeros for the IP or 169.....?

Have you tried resetting the modem and rebooting the PC?
Have you tried removing the NIC from Device Manager and letting Windows Reinstall it?

Hi Degs
Thanx for the reply. The card doesn't work w/ XP.
There are still other issues. I cannot get the linksys wireless adpater to work.
I was on the phone w/ linksys for quite a awhile then they told me I had issues w/ my comp and I need tech help.
I can get the wireless adapter to get a signal but I cannot access the internet. When I try to repair the connection I get a message Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. I tried to ping Yahoo and I get a message unable to locate IP something or other.
Do you think it is something I can "fix" or should I see professional help?

Thanx as always
Ron

Hi Ron

This is something that you should be able to fix yourself, but you need to follow the directions.

Click start/run type cmd in the box and click OK. At the prompt type ipconfig /all and post back the results obtained. We'll take it from there. BF

Is your Router setup for DHCP?

Have you tried resetting the Router and rebooting the PC?

Hi,

Sorry to go over this again.

Can you get it working when connected via Cat5 cable?
What card doesn't work?
Have you tried another cheap ethernet card?

The card that doesn't work is a Linksys EtherFast 10/100 Intetrated PC card. The literature said it does not work w/ XP. I used this card in this computer when I was running Win98. I upgraded( no reformat) to Xp so I could use the Wireless adapter.
So I don't have a way to get to the internet

Thanx

I've used a Linksys Ethernet II card with XP.

Have you tried adding a cheap Ethernet card and connecting with a Cat5 cable?

From this it sounds as if your network protocol stack is hosed somewhere. I advise trying to get it to a point where ipconfig works, then worry about getting a network connection.

You can determine if you have a winsock problem by doing the following.

Put in the windows XP CD and navigate to the support >Tools folder.
Double click setup and select full install.
Click Start >run >cmd {enter}
Type netdiag /test:winsock /v {enter}

If so try, http://www.spychecker.com/download/d...sockxpfix.html
AND this http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

If you're still out of luck try reinstalling the TCP/IP stack.

To install TCP/IP over itself (to do this you need a copy of nettcpip.inf there IS one on the Windows XP CD and MAY be one on your hard drive)

Right click "My Network Places" select Properties.
Right click the connection and select Properties.
Click Install >Protocol >add >have disk
Browse to the location of nettcpip.inf (see above)
Select TCP/IP click OK
Reboot

Let us know the state of things after all this and we can take it from there.

Right click "My Network Places" select Properties.
Right click the connection and select Properties.
Click Install >Protocol >add >have disk
Browse to the location of nettcpip.inf (see above)
Select TCP/IP click OK
Reboot

under the general tab there are 3 choices:
Client for Microsoft Newtworks
File & Printer sharing
Internet protocol
Which one?

I also found Nettcpip in C:/Windows/INF in doing a search showing hidden files but I cannot find it by just looking thru explore>c>windows
I also couldn't find it on the disk xp upgrade
Thank you
Ron

My guess is that you don't have show hidden files enabled in explorer.
In the explorer window, go to Tools->folder options->view
Select 'show hidden files and folders', then ok.

You should be able to go ahead with the version on your C drive.

Click Start >run >cmd {enter}
Type netdiag /test:winsock /v {enter}"

Thats it. Looks like some warnings are listed.

THANK YOU EVERYONE

p.s. when I look at support of the wireless network connection the address type is invalid ( which is a change from before . it was all 000.000.0.0.)
and under details I actually have a physical address now which is :
00-12-17-14-A1-00. Everything else is all 000. IF I try to reapir I get a new message that states: The following steps of repair operation failed:
Renewing the IP address
Refreshing all DCHP leases and re-registering DNS names

One thing that seems to indicates a possible problem is
Quote:
NetBT transports test. . . . . . . : Failed
List of NetBt transports currently configured:
[FATAL] Unable to retrieve transport list from Redir. [ERROR_NETWORK_UNREACH
ABLE]
Do you have netbios installed?

Also, does the device driver still show up in the device manager? It didn't show up in netdiag.
