2 QUESTIONS:

1. lOADED WIN98 ON 2ND HD, TRIED TO RUN 1ST HD WITH DOS6.0. MSW, EXCEL AND OTHER PROGRAMS WON'T RUN EXCEPT INTO WORDPAD - NOT FULL PROGRAMS. UNINSTALLED WIN98, NORTON UTILITIES TO 'RESTORE' MY 1ST HD, EVERYTHINGS OKAY - BUT NOT THROUGH WIN98. HOW DO I LOAD WIN98 OVER DOS 6.0 AND WINDOWS 3.1 TO HAVE FULL FUNCTION OF PROGRAMS (MSW, EXCEL, ETC).

2. SHOULD I USE 'DUAL-BOOTING' OR IS THAT NOT THE BEST WAY TO GO. i THOUGHT WIN98 WOULD PICK UP ALL THE INFOR FROM THE OLD WINDOWS AND THE PROGRAMS WOULD RUN? SO HOW SHOULD I LOAD IT THE NEXT TIME (WIN98 THAT IS).

GRAND THANKS FOR ANY HELP, MIKE CHRISTY

Welcome to CTH

1st Windows is DOS, it does not need it. And should not be installed over DOS, Win 3.1.

If you can and don't need to save any data on the partition you want Win 98 on.

Format the drive and install Windows 98 as a "Clean Install". If you go HERE (http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm) and download the file Windows 98 Custom, No Ramdrive. (Not to the floppy).

Once downloaded double click on the file and it will extract the necessary bootfiles to your clean floppy that you will have ready.

Not boot the computer with this floppy (make sure the BIOS is set ot boot from a flopppy first). Watch the screen say NO to CDROM support, you will end up at the A: prompt.

Now type format c: (hit<enter>) follow the screen prompts. WARNING- All Data Will Be Lost on the C: partition of the drive

Now reboot again but this time say YES to CDROM support, watch the screen as it will assign a driove letter to your cdrom (probably R:), lets say it is R: then you would put the Windows 98 CD in and type:

R: (hit <enter>)
Setup (hit<enter>)

If your windows 98 CD is an UPGRADE then this will not work.
