Okay, first time poster, newbie here, be gentle.

Comcast Cable connection.

Cable Modem --> Linksys RTR --> 3 pc's

PC 1 (Main) running XP Home, Service Pack 2, McAfee

PC 2 & 3 running XP Home, Service Pack 2, AVG

PC 1 will be surfing the internet and spradically the connection to the internet via IE6 or Outlook will be lost. Sometimes it works for 10 minutes, sometimes for a couple of days, it varies greatly.

When PC 1 is hosed, PC 2 & 3 can still surf and check email.

During the time that PC 1 cannot surf or check email, it can still access the other two pc's via their hostnames i.e. \\pc1name (file:///pc1name) or \\pc2name (file:///pc2name). In fact, and this is where it loses me, PC 1 can still ping yahoo.com and google.com, etc.. (That is where I get really confused).

The only way to resolve the issue (for now anyway) is to reboot the machine and wait until it happens again.

I have ran virus checks and also Spybot S&D and AdAware on all three machines and they come back clean.

I have NOT attempted to use a different browser such as opera or mozilla, that is going to be my next step, however I won't be back out there for a couple of days.

Oh, one other thing I just remembered. Pops has a personal website and when he is working on it, he leaves an explorer ftp window connection open to his site. When he tries to ul his new files...and it sits there... he knows he is screwed. Service Pack 2 has been installed for a while now... yet this problem just popped up within the past 2 weeks.

I am normally the "go to" guy for pc or tech stuff within the family and my group of friends...but I am totally at a loss here. Can anyone give me a suggestion or two before I do the ultimate and format and reinstall xp (as a last resort) pls pls pls...I hate re-installing xp.. way too many friggin updates!!

I am doing some reading on a very sim sit at a friends place. I have not as of yet come up with anything that I would be willing to advise you with just yet. I can say however, before I did a clean new install I would try to uninstall SP2. That way you can see if it was just an issue with SP2. Doing a whole clean new install is drastic heheh I'd leave that as a last last last resort.

I was talking to a buddy of mine, and he gave some suggestions.

Upon locking up last night (monday - 12-6-04)

I had him run the following; in this order.....

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
arp -d *
ipconfig /renew

he then reopened IE .. but still no go.. so he had to reboot to access the internet via IE and Outlook again.

Here is the weird part... it hasn't locked up since last night... roughly 24 hours now and still going strong..... i know i know... I am probably screwing myself by talking about it.. but who knows......we will just have to wait and see.....

Try http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html.

I had that problem appear when I purged a virus on a client's computer.

One man's experience here: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1641363,00.asp

Good luck,
