Setting up a wirless connection.

Alright, I bought a wireless Xmicro USB adapter, a Linksys G eries router, and thought it'd be a piece of cake to set up a wireless network. Oh, how wrong I was...

My Compy (She's a little dated, but still good):
98SE
1.1GHz Duron
312 MB RAM
120 Gig HD
Network Card: (ZD 1201) EEE 802.11b USB adapter
ADSL connection
I think the rest is nonimportant. tell me if I forgot anything.

After ages and ages of trying, resetting the IP's in cmdprmpt and going throught the website for Linksys, I've had no luck. I'd be satisfied now if I just got an internet conenction. Right now, I'm working through LAN wire and the plug in ports, so that's fine, but I'd really like to move my computer back up to my room, and cabling it is not an option. I've tried dialing the router's IP in cmdprmpt, and it shows a signal, but when I try to connect, it can't automatically detect the IP. i even specified what it was, but then I get a "Connecting..." message, and it never connects. This has frustrated the heck out of me! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I heard that wireless really sucks for gaming and Kazaa, is this true?

Hi oracle

Welcome to CTH

No wireless doesn't suck for anything, provided it's working OK. However KaZaA does suck for everything. It is a great way to introduce infections into your computer.

So for a first step update your AV and do a full scan, let's try to start off with a clean machine. Next read the instalation information for your wireless router and wireless card, ensure you have installed them correctly. Does your wireless card work under Win98? Do you have a Win98 driver for it installed?

Have you installed the USB driver for Win98 for the wireless card?

Does your machine have a firewall installed? You may have to uninstall it to get the wireless card working and then reinstall it afterwards. Note I said uninstall, not just turn it off.

Next if you still run into problems, post back with details of the setup instructions for your wireless router and card. And post the exact error messages that you receive.

Good luck. BF
