I just bought a used laptop and formated the HD to install a windows xp. I also added a PC100 128 MB ram. Installing the OS is no problem, but for some reason I'm not able to connect to the internet. I tried it with and with out a router. I went to my network connection and I dont see any adapter. I also went to device manager and didn't see any network adapter. could it be that I need to update windows first? But how can I install it if I cant connect to the internet. Also when I plug in the CAT5 to the ethernet, I dont see any of the lights going on. The laptop originaly came with W2K OS with NT. Please help.

here is some info about the laptop
Dell Latitude C600
256 MB of ram (its now 386 since I added a 128)
20 GB HD
Toshiba DVD Player
Battery
also came with a mini wireless PCI card that was already installed from dell

You obviously do not have the correct driver for the NIC that your laptop has in it. I would suggest going to dell.com and accessing the support pages. Enter your Service Tag number and see if they have an XP driver for the NIC in that particular model. I am assuming that you are using the on board one. That should get you back in business. You will need to update the driver via device manager, assuming that it shows a NIC that is not installed properly.

Any suggestion on how can I update driver since cant connect to the interenet? On device manager under modem, it shows U.S. Robotics, I dont see any network adapter icons in there. I also see a PCMIA its a texas 1410 or 1420, did some research and texas instrument doesnt support it

you should be able to download the driver to a floppy from another computer and update it.
