Question win98 se floppy drive at A:\

I'm looking for a little bit of help and I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a gateway computer with an astro recovery cd (reinstalls everything to shipping state) and a win98 se boot floppy.

My computer crashed a couple days ago and I've been trying to get everything back up. I inserted the recovery cd and ran it- no problems.

Now I put the win98 se boot floppy in --- it brings up start windows with/without cd-rom. I hit cd-rom (of course). It loads up the disk --- then sends me to A:\ ------ I need to get into the windows98 from here.

Ok so I then type in to go to c:\ then cd:windows to get into the windows directory when I type win I get a blue screen stating something about VFAT and that the system is halted.

What have I done wrong? What can I do to get it to start with CD-ROM. I've tried downloading things like my camera, keyboard (new), printer and none will load without this.

I would be greatly indebt if someone can help me with this.

Thank you in advance,
Jennifer

Read through the portion pertaining to Windows 98. Follow the instructions under Resolution.

No problem, feel free to post back into this thread for further assistance with this problem, or if you need any help with the instructions on the page you've printed.

Best of luck!

Exclamation I can't get some of it to work

Hi Hypnotizeminds

You helped me so much yesterday maybe you can help me out with this part.

It suggest that I : Restart your computer, press and hold down CTRL after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose the Safe Mode Command Prompt Only option from the Startup menu.

problem is when I get to the screen to choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only... I can't choose it... the arrow keys won't go to it and I can't use the number keys.

Is there anything I can do to reach that area???

Thank you again for your patience with me.

jen

Windows 98 Does Not Start in Safe Mode
Any of the following conditions can cause Windows 98 not to start in Safe mode:
Your computer is infected with a virus.

For additional information about computer viruses, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q129972 Description of Computer Viruses

----------

Your computer's CMOS settings are not correct. Check your computer's CMOS settings to make sure they are correct. Note that you may need to contact the computer manufacturer to verify these settings.

----------

There is a hardware conflict. These conflicts can include, but are not limited to, PCI BIOS settings, IRQ conflicts, redundant COM ports (for example, two COM1 ports, or an internal modem set to use the same COM port as an existing serial port), and defective RAM chips.

I will look into this further tonight and get back with you as soon as possible, in the meantime, if the above gives you any idea as to what might be the problem, let us know (i.e. if you've made any recent hardware changes, changed BIOS settings, etc). If you are familiar with the CMOS jumper on your motherboard, set it to clear the stored information (reset the BIOS its default configuration), I recommend you do so. Then, one by one, restore any changes you have made in the past to optimize your BIOS configurations, checking the accessibility of Safe Mode between each change you make.
