About a week ago my computer froze while shutting down. Then, when I booted it back up, it said it was going to run in "safe mode". To get out of it, the ms help file lead me through some kind of step by step selective rebooting or something and, long story short, now my moniter's display is at less than 256 colors and it won't let me raise it any higher. I could really use some help with this, half of my programs won't even run with such pathetic resolution
. I would appreciate it a lot, thank you.

Are you using an AGP or PCI video card, or onboard video? Try uninstalling your display drivers and reinstalling them and rebooting your PC. If your card is nVidia, visit www.nvidia.com and download the latest drivers.

I'll have to get back to you on the card to be sure, but I believe it's AGP. How do I uninstall the driver? (device manager, or somewhere in the control panel maybe?) And when I do uninstall it, how would I/what would I need to re-install it?

Video driver uninstall
I believe you go to control panel, click on add/remove programs and scroll down to AGP driver setup and highlight it. Then click on remove/install button. Then reboot. This will automatically select the correct driver.
You can also manually go to control panel and click on display then settings. Then you can select the 16 bit or 32 bit display and click Apply to see if it will change the color setup. |

Alright, I got some driver information: (if it's any help)
Manufacturer: S3 Chip Type: Trio64V2/DX(86C775) or GX(86C785)Rev G DAC type: Internal Memory: 1 MB Software version: 4.0 Current files: s3mm.drv,*vdd,*vflatd,s3.vxd I went to add/remove and it didn't list any of the drivers, only programs. In the device manager, it gives the option of "removing" the driver, is that what I'm looking for? -Also, just as a side note, ever since the computer's stroke, every time I boot it up it automatically goes to the screen for choosing the start-up mode. I click "normal startup". I hope I can get this fixed.

Get back into Device Manager and REMOVE the driver.
Now reboot, Windows will find the video card and should reinstall the driver.
