Audio editor/mixer
I'm looking for an application with which to do simple (mostly) audio editing and mixing. Stuff like taking parts of mp3's and putting them together, basic sound effects, etc. Although I'm not looking for anything very complicated, I've set my eye on Adobe Audition (with which I have no experience whatsoever, by the way). So is it a good choice? And if not, can you name a few apps that would be suitable for me (and maybe their pro's and con's, if it's not too much to ask)?

Audacity is a free MP3 editor.
It's simple to use, but doesn't have much in effects http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Cool Edit would have been my next choice. It is now the program you mentioned. Audition will have a lot more options for effects and editing.
