Hi there.
What netscape version?
When do you get the error - on hotmail "home" page or after trying to log in?

older version of netscape 4.5 tried to download the most recent version, but wasn't successful with that either for some reason

I get the error before I ever get to hotmail home page.

In Netscape, go into the Edit Menu, then to Preferences and the Advanced section. In there, you should find a section about the cache. Empty the cache then see if that cures the problem

emptied the cache as instructed, but still get the same response when trying to open hotmail (didn't think I would need to, but re-booted just in case)

It will open thru Internet Explorer, just not netscape....

This would seem to be a problem with the Netscape browser then, although I can't think what it might be at the minute

Do you have difficulties with other sites? Is it the hotmail home page or after you've logged in?

No problems with other sites. I can't get to any part of the hotmail site..... I immediately get the netscape box with the ! inside a yellow triangle, and the message: the document contained no data try again later or contact the servers administrator

just a thought

(only had netscape installed for about 2 hours before giving up and deleting it)

hotmail has had more then it's share of problems with hackers and has beefed up security.
does netscape (especially the older versions) support the (SSL) 128 bit encryption that hotmail now uses ? if so , is there a way to turn it off and on in netscape like you can in IE ?

may not have anything to do with the problem but have you had problems with any other sites that use this ?

Good idea Mr1drful, unfortunately I don't have 4.x versions installed anywhere at the mo' just v6 which handles it fine.
Anyone else able to test with 4.x so I don't have to install it on one of mine?

the part that is puzzling to me is that I was able to open hotmail without any problem for about a year, then there was a brief period of about 4 days that it wouldn't open, then it did again, and now suddenly it won't open, and hasn't for a couple of months. thanks for all the input, but don't think it is likely to start up again.

I read that MSN did something with their main site that blocked out non IE browsers (and later changed their minds), but I'm sure I'd have heard something if they'd blocked it on hotmail too...

If they've changed the browser requirements regards security they may have that would mean that a browser that doesn't meet their specs would stop working.
