need a little more info. I can think of several tank games from the shareware days.

need a little more info. I can think of several tank games from the shareware days. The background was black (above & below the horizon). The terrain (green grid, obstacles (green out-lined boulders) as well as tanks were drawn in outline only.
There was only about three sounds, tank engine, tank fire, tank hit and maybe when your tank hit an obstacle.
There was a radar of sorts in the upper right I seem to remember that showed where the enemy tank was in relation to your orientation as it came onto the battlefield.

You're talking about Battlezone - a great game for it's day.
Get hold of MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) and then find the Battlezone ROM from any one of a number of sites and you'll be driving a tank around, dodging missiles and remembering how basic games used to be!!
Elevator Action is also pretty good fun.
