Before february 1 2000 I was 100% computer illiterate I didn't even know how to turn one of these things these things on. Well in the first month I got the virus Pretty Park and had to have my computer reprogramed. In May my brother came up to Canada to visit me and he didn't like the way my computer was set up so he changed a few things and ended up doing something to it and I had to have the whole thing reprogramed but this time it cost me over 400$. I bought a CD burner and it works fine because I had it installed by a professional. Well to make a long story short my brother came up to visit me again and guess what HE DID IT AGAIN. He installed my new logitech Quick camera so we could do the video mail thing and since he has installed the darn thing I can no longer get into websites that have plugins for music or animations with out having to go into my computer Findfiles from there I click on media player open a midi music file play it for about a minute. after all this I can get into websites but noe for long because after about an hour my machine freezes up on me again and if I am working on my webaite I can'tfor long because everything get's sluggish and I have a hard time to publish my pages. or . ittakes a while to be able to get into web sites ::: Every time I turn my computer on I get two little windows that come up One says that Real Player has been activated and the other onessays that Real player has been deactivated . This never happened before MY BROTHER installed my video camera and he played with something to get my microphone to work.
As I have said I am very new at this and do not know 90% of what the initials are or what they are for so if you can help me pleasemake the explinations as simple as possible .
I am begining to think that it was a mistake buying this thing the age of 47 I am too stupid at this to have bought such a complicated machine

Hi
First of all welcome to Cyber tech Help. Lets get another thing out of the way if I can learn computers and I am 52 then you can to.
First what browser do you use for surfing the internet.
Could you give us some information on your computer, such a processor speed, amount of memory you have and anything else that may be revelant.
Do you clean out your temporary internet files often, as this can make your machine sluggish and freeze up if they have not been cleaned out.
I would try uninstalling Realplayer and then reinstalling it and see if that makes a difference.
If you do not have a good antivirus program here is a link to a good free one that my son and I are using.
www.antivirus.cai.com (http://www.antivirus.cai.com)
One more hint there are a lot of good Computer magazines out there that you could learn a lot from and most of them are written in plain language that anybody can understand

Hi there, don't throw in the towell just yet.
1) keep that brother away from it.
2) It sounds like he has installed Realplayer incorrectly and let it overtake all the media file associations. This means that the PC will try to use RealPlayer to play all your multimedia on the PC or on the Web. While RealPlayer does a good job with it's own streaming audio format, it is not good for the rest.
I agree step one will be uninstall realplayer and re-install.
Go start/settings/control panel - add/remove programs and find realplayer and remove it.
Then re-install.
Post back when you have done that and we'll sort out re-associating the file types back to Windows Media Player, removing RealPlayer from your start-up list (will get rid of those pop-ups on start-up) and sorting out your internet slowdowns.

Hi
You can find realplayer here www.realplayer.com (http://www.realplayer.com) Just download it to a folder such as temp or My download files. Scroll down on the page and you will see RealPlayer Basic 8 which is the one you want. That is the one that is free.

Wellfinally I was able to get back into this site for a while Netscape kept telling it couldn't fint the server . In any case I am here and I still have the problems . so I have uninstalled real player but those two little windows still come up saying real down load express has been abled and disabled . This morning I went into my computer find files thing : and looked for plugins . The only one that has plug in files in it is my Sympatico High speed edition (My on line service) I tried to open the I tried to open the SHOCK WAVE FLASH and SHOCK WAVE PLUGIN . and I can't open the files because it says the file is damaged that I have to reinstall it . Could this be the problem . I know that my brother played with my sympatico program also when he installed my Quick camera . so if I uninstall and reinstall should I install the quick camera before or afterI do this
Thankyou Alice

Alice that's good to hear - sorry I haven't replied to your email, it's really better to keep it all here so others can see what's happening, thankfully you can now get back into the site.
Read Download Express is not the same Real Player and I'm sorry we missed this earlier. This is a seperate download manager.
To stop it loading at startup you'll need to use MSCONFIG (I'm using W95 so can't give you in depth instructions on that).
With that software installed you should be able to enjoy any audio on the web. Go to Real.com (http://realguide.real.com/music) and test it out.
Phzzz.com (http://www.geocities.com/~phzzz/musicf.html) has embedded midis you can test as well.
Let me know if you can hear anything at either of these sites.

Hey,
Just to expand on Smurfys MSCONFIG suggestion.
Click Start then Run and type MSCONFIG
Then click on the Startup Tab and untick Download Express.
This will stop it from loading at boot.
Like Smurfy said could you please keep your question on the boards please. The reason for this is so if anyone else was to have a problem similar to yours they can refer to this topic and the solution we give you that will eventually solve all your problems so they can fix it themselves quickly.
Thankyou
Smurfy - still using Win95 mate ???? or is that 98Lite's super compact version of 98 with 95's Explorer.exe ????? I'm surprised !!! http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Here were the important points from the email:
Date: Fri, 22 Sep 00 12:31PM NZST
Well I did uninstall real player like you said but I couldn't find real player to reinstall it so I found something called Windows media player but I had to uninstall that also because it attached it self to all my midi music files right away so I thought I wouldn't take a chance on something I didn't know . But today I was talking to someone who says he had the same problem as me and he never reinstalled it so I want to know do I need this program or not an I get into website with out it.
Now back to my problem I have uninstalled real player but those two little windows that say Real down load express has been enabled and the other one that says Real player has disabled still come up every time I turn my computer on and I still can't get into web sites with music with out having to play some midi from my files . I have also uninstalled my logithec quick camera a few days ago because it is then I started to have problems when MY BROTHER installed for me I know it might only be something very easy to fix or it might be something huge that will cost mean arm and a leg again .

Well then, I suppose you can try an Internet Explorer repair.
Go Start/Settings/control panel/add-remove programs.
Highlight Internet Explorer and click add/remove.
You will get three options - Add / repair / restore.
Select repair an OK...
