View Full Version : Cable question

Alright, we have a cable internet connection on our personal computer. I also have a computer I just work on, with a dial up external modem and I use a program called PC Anywhere on it.
Anyway, I understand (I think) that we could connect the cable line from our personal PC to my work computer and that way I'd have an internet cable hook-up there, too........I don't really get how both my husband and I could be looking at different things on the net at the same time, but we could, right? Just want to clarify before we would undertake this.
Also, should it be any problem, when I have to use the dial-up telephone line for work, to just switch and do that?
Thanks.

Wow, I can see you know what you're talking about! I'm going to do all that and get back to you. Re the work thing, I connect to a computer at work, but the computer I have at home to connect with PC Anywhere does belong to me, and though I would love a better connection, I'm not even thinking along those lines because the connection at the hospital is via regular modem......so, that makes it out anyway, right? But of course if I could somehow use a cable connection without having them do anything at the work site, please DO let me know because I sure would ask for permission in a minute. Anyway, what I have in mind is just for personal use, I just don't want it to interfere with my work in anyway.
Alright, I'll return with the answers to your questions. Thank you!
PS: Just to be sure, don't know if I'm making myself clear, I just want to share the cable connection my hubby and I have on what I call "our computer" because it's used for nothing but us........but the other computer also belongs to me, and no, I don't want to involve my company in any way, shape or form.......only to be able to get on the internet at the same time my hubby is across the room doing it. Sorry if I didn't explain myself well, that happens with me!

Alright, this info leaves out any information about the computer at the hospital.......because it's not relevant unless you truly do know of some way I could get a cable connection without them having to change anything over there, which I don't want. As far as that, I just want to be absolutely positive that I can still connect via external modem with PC Anywhere to the computer at the hospital......which is all I do, no network involved because we had tried that and it never did work right. I work at home, and the only thing that belongs to them is that their ISD Department gave me the disc for PC Anywhere, I installed it on my computer, and then gave it back.
Alright, our cable line is on a Sony computer with Windows 95, Pentium 32.0 MB RAM, connection is CS3. (Edit, that's wrong, connection is LAN).
The computer just across the room that I would like to connect the cable to is a Compaq Windows 95, Pentium 64.0 MB RAM - it has no network card. There is no internet connection on it now, but when I look under the properties, it says these network components are installed:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Client for Netware Networks
RLN Dial-up Adapter
IPX/SPX-Compatible Protocol
TCP/IP
I use a 56K Robotics external modem on it to connect to the computer at the hospital. Very important, I'm very un-technical but I'm 80% sure that the reason all those protocols above are on there is because in the past, the ISD Department tried and tried and tried to get a good connection straight to the network on site from my home, but it just never did work for whatever reason, terribly slow, blah blah blah. In fact it was a nightmare, and so when finally someone came up with this idea of just using PC Anywhere to connect to a computer on site that already was on the network, wham - works beautifully.
So, I'd just like to run a cable line from the Sony to the Compaq so that my husband and I could be on the net at the same time, only I don't want it to interfere with work.
I'm sorry to have written a book here! I hope I answered the questions right. Looking forward to hearing what you have to say!

Hey Damhna, so, is it possible for me to "network" to my daughter's computer....way at the other end of the house, so that she can use cable too, without having to buy her a cable modem, or is that ridiculous? :O) She is using a free isp now and she can't even upload IM because it times out.
Also, will you email me when you reply to this? I forget to check the other forums....hehe. Thanks. :O) I'm so glad you came over and joined us!

Thank you, Dahmna. Sorry I'm so late in my reply. It does sound like quite a headache, in fact, possibly too much of a headache for me to want to undertake it. The either/or part doesn't bother me at all, because I try to stay off the net when I'm working......too easy to get distracted!
Let me think on it, and I'll give a holler if I decide to go for it in which case I will need your guidance! Thank you for the reply. Glad I didn't start anything thinking it would be simple when in fact it isn't.

Harrie,
Another option would be to use Winroute.
Its a home internet connection sharing program.
One PC runs it (acts as a server - which would be the direct internet access PC) the other the client.
This software I believe is free (Well it used to be - you might have to check on this - but if it isn't it would be relatively inexpensive) for users who are only connecting two pcs together so this may be your best bet.
Here's a link ::::
I think from memory you're after the Winroute Lite - there are a lot to choose from !!!
It's very easy to setup - I use it here to share my 56k (chug chug chug) connection with my wife.
If you need a hand let me know http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
You do need to have a TCP/IP network already running. But that is quite simple to do.

Thanks a heap, Mishy, very useful info. Also heard about a D-Link modem which I think is somewhat similar. Looks like I may get this connection yet! Appreciate the link.....looks like it costs 30.00 if you get it, a very fair price IMO. It's research time. Edit: Seems to be 59.00, not awake enough yet! D-Link is I think 99.00.
