View Full Version : Should I or Should I not?

Most of the pictures at my photopage are in the end result converted to .jpg by pictureveiwer or photodeluxe. They originally were in either tif or some such format.
I've been thinking for some time now to convert them over to photoshop .jpg (format) for the
reason that I could reduce the file size (K) down considerably yet still keep the quality of each
picture in tact.
Two reasons why I haven't done the change is, as it stands they to my eyes look fine and the second reason is it would be a pain in the a** !!! Not to say very time consuming!!
I do have the originals in zips or cd-rs which I could start from there and work down to PS.jpg. Or I could grab each picture at my photopage (pictureveiwer.jpg) one at a time and convert it to PS.psd then finish with PS.jpg . Either way would take alot of work and time. Basically starting over with photopage.
If thats the case then I've been giving some thought of moving my photopage to another server which offers more space (not much more). That way I could leave my existing photopage as is and build the new one at my leisure plus improve some mistakes from my past ignorance.
Below is a couple images of the same picture. One came from my photopage as is (pictureveiwer.jpg) at 82K. The other one I converted from the pictureveiwer to .psd , then to photoshop .jpg which is about 40K just to *test* my brainstorm/hair brain idea. I realize one shouldn't go from jpg to psd then back to jpg but...
AS IS (http://user.netomia.com/palws/falls.jpg)
PS (http://user.netomia.com/palws/fallsPS.jpg)
OK back to the sixty-four dollar question!!
"Why do you want to go through all this effort/work/crap?!?.. When your photopage is just fine the way it stands! I like it!" Geeesss I just talked myself out of it. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I blame this wacky idea on the rain which a curtain *thor* that must live in Oregon sent it down here....

Hope you don't mind, the "as is" photo is now my wallpaper. Converted, it looks too grainy.

I have to agree with zipulrich, converted, it is too grainy, “as is” is a very sharp image. I also went to your web site and looked at some of your other pictures, which are very nice, I might add, and I don’t think that the savings you may get in size reduction would make that much of a difference in the in the speed of loading to make it worth the time you would spend converting them. I’m looking forward to looking at the rest of your pictures when I get a chance.

If you really feel like it, you do need to use the original Tiff files with Photoshop and forget about Pictureviewer altogether. Using Pictureviewer to converts a jpg to psd then Photoshop to go back to jpg will, as you stated, give you poorer quality images.
Loading speed is important but on personal pages where people are expecting to see a lot of images they are far more tolerant if things take a bit longer to load.

I'm not saying "too grainy". It was just something that I noticed. Had I not compaired the pics side by side, I might not have noticed at all.

Oh and joost when you talk to the man Mishy (creator/owner of this board), you will find
he is very cool in all respects. EXCEPT don't put a handle in front of Mishy!!
Example: Mr.-your greatness- sir,etc etc.
Once a long time ago I made the mistake of putting a "sir" in front of Mishy on a thread and for some reason everytime I posted (for days mind ya) my post would end up here!! (http://pub11.ezboard.com/bfreecomputertechhelp) <grin>

The best jpeg shrinker I ever came across is jpeg wizard, from www.jpegwizard.com (http://www.jpegwizard.com)
It's free for a start and you can define areas of the image and apply a different level of compression to them.
There is an online version but it's not all that great http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
It's a shame there isn't a Mac version of the standalone app
