My son just received a headset and microphone to use with his new World of Warcraft game.
When he plugged it into the panel at the front of the CPU nothing happened. Do we need to "install" them? Or do something else to get them to work?
Please help. Thanks.
And a very Merry Christmas to you all!!

Usually you do not need to install but you do need to make sure they are turned on in the operating system and you also have to turn on sound in some games.
If the above is okay, then see if there are plugs in the back of the computer

by front panel do you mean you have a special face plate with audio in/uot puts?
If you are plugging it into the CD/DVD drive headphone socket then it will not work. That is for direct sound from the drive, such as an audio CD.

Yes, we have a special face plate with audio in/out puts.
How do we turn it on in the OS?

Do the headphones work from the back input?
Have you enabled the volume in Sound Control?

Success! I went into the control panel, then the advanced area and saw that the mic setting was on "mute". Once we unchecked the mute box, the headset worked. Thanks guys!
