When I log in under Win xp IE automatically starts. I check the startup file and there is nothing listed there to start the program. IE tries to open a location that does not exist. How can I get rid of this happening.

It's probably another program starting IE, not IE starting itself and that program is most likely spyware.

If you haven't scanned for and removed spyware, download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot (http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=SPYBOT&tg=dl-2001&search=+Go%21+) and/or Ad-Aware (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button). Use them both, one at a time, since each tends to find things the other misses. Let them clean up any spyware they find.
