OK, try an electrical outlet store where all the electricians get their hardware for their jobs. There's one here where I live that does that stuff...I think. Hmmmm, anyway, they may be able to help you. Or find a local computer shop that does lots of networking. They should be able to make one up for you.

final results:

after buying a Laplink cable, the computers still would not connect. with eight computers here, i still had to borrow a notebook computer to try different computers. i have now determined that the desktop computer had a problem with a corrupted file.

the Laplink cable allowed me to prove a connection, then prove that a null modem cable is all that is necessary.
