Another Hotmail Problem

I have a client who cannot get to msn.com or hotmail.com (page cannot be displayed). However, she can go to other websites. I had her try some of the suggestions under the other hotmail post, with no luck. The only other thing that's been installed recently was a children's program (Hello Kitty Cutie) and I noticed it installed ActiveX 8.?. Could this be the problem?

When she tries to ping and tracert to these addresses, the reply times out. Pinging and tracert to these addresses times out, as it does on mine, but I can get there.

Any thoughts?

Thanks much,
Cathy

hi PC Lady, is this problem just happening recently? If so, it's happening to me too.
I can go anywhere on the internet except Hotmail hangs. I can get to it from msn.com but still it hangs when I try to delete things.

try the following, it seems to work for some users

n Internet Explorer click Tools then Internet Options
Click the Advanced Tab and scroll to the area labelled HTTP 1.1 settings
Untick Use HTTP 1.1
Tick Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections
Click OK
Close and browser windows you have open and try again

Tweaker: checked this and no mention of msn.com; hotmail.com was set to always allow.

Suze: yes, just started happening today. Whereas she couldn't get to msn.com earlier, now she can, but she can't log into hotmail (the .net Passport sign in)

Renegade: tried this right off from the replies to the other hotmail post; no luck

Note: she also cannot run Windows Update - error 0x800c0005. The KB gives some names of dll's to run regsvr32 on. We did this, rebooted, no change. Would the state of these two links in Texas possibly have anything to do with the problem: http://www.internettrafficreport.com/namerica.htm?

Hello PCLady, have you tried running a virus check?

Also if your running a firewall try disabling it and see if you can connect.

Thanks, Tweaker. Yes, plus SpyBot and AdAware. No firewall. It was working fine Saturday. Shut down overnight. Not working Sunday. Couldn't get to msn.com earlier, but could last night. Haven't heard from user this morning, so don't know if it's cleared itself up yet.

Appreciate your feedback.

Well at this point I would think the problem is on their end, wait and try again later and see what happens.

Still having the same problem. Tried uninstalling AVG and the software I installed last Saturday. No luck. Tried setting up a dial-up connection with a different ISP, no luck with hotmail or windows update. (I don't have a problem accessing her hotmail account from my PC.)

Hello PCLady, sorry took so long to get back to you. Give this Microsoft link a look over and see if something there helps.

I thought you all might find Microsoft's response to this hotmail problem interesting:

Thank you for contacting MSN Hotmail Technical Support. My name is Arvind.

I understand that, you are unable to access your hotmail account as you are receiving HTTP error 403.4 whenever you try accessing it.

I understand your concern and apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused you.

I have thoroughly checked your account and found out that it is working properly.

Recently, Hotmail experienced a technical problem that affected users only on the specific server where your account is stored. Our staff is working on restoring access to your account.

Hotmail is committed to bringing you fast, free, and reliable service.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Regards,

Arvind

Guess what?! Downloading and reinstalling IE6 from MS's download page fixed the problem ...

Case closed. Thanks, all.
